| ... I think I've just contracted the flu for the first time since I got here. As per Murphy's law, I was going to finally get vaccinated tomorrow. So how long does this last the first time a newb gets it? Should I get the vaccination anyway? I hope it doesn't exceed a month; about a month from now I'm supposed to take off for a Phillipines vacation with a coupla friends. |

flu viruses change every winter
i haven't noticed anything distinctive about influenza here:
anywhere from 24 hours to two weeks, depending on the virus |

Well, I seem to get hit harder by everything here. Sounds like I'll get better in time for the Phillipines.
Next question: Anyone know if it's okay to get a flu vaccination while you *have* the flu? |

| Do not get a flu shot if you are sick with a cold or the flu.That is what we were told in Canada. |

You're probably right. I was pretty sure that's what I was told growing up to, but wanted to double check. |

i was here almost 3 months before i got sick and then i got so sick with the flu OMG - totally sucked. 24 hours straight in bed, fever, chills, ugh. my director kept coming over and dragging me to the dr - but they gave me shitty medicine and i kept telling them just let me stay in bed and i'll be ok in a few days.
it's like this for foreigners in the u.s. also - people don't have the same immunity like the locals - the first time is the worst.
you got to push the fluids - i recall not feeling really well for about 3-4 weeks - so take care fo yourself. watch out for relapses; watch out for flying ill - you don't want to go somewhere and be sick and not be able to fly back
as for the vaccination - you need to be 100% when you get it - this is so your immune system can respond properly - it takes about 2 weeks for the vaccine to kick in - i get mine every year but have heard now they are recommending people get one 2x a year - i think that's a good idea for teachers - i don't understand for the life of me why anyone would avoid a vaccination
btw - vaccines don't offer 100% immunity - but they do offer much milder cases of the flu that aren't as severe and don't last as long.

A few years ago I got a bad case of the flu and was able to get to a doctor within 48 hours and they gave me Tamiflu. I took it for a couple of days and was fine.
I'm not sure if a Korean doctor would prescribe it or not. At the time I saw a Canadian doctor at Severence Hosptial.
