...so does this mean that if, two months into my contract, i am being treated like dirt, i can jsut jump on a plane, or is the return portion of the flight already set to a certain day?

(i am also an advocate for not midnight-running, and would look for any other solution, but the fact remains that this seems to be many peoples' last resort!)

Also, can someone tell me approx. how long a flight it would be from Calgary to Seoul (actual flight time, not including stopovers)?

Thanks in advance, you witty sarcastic baiting bunch! Surprised

If you bail and use the return ticket, it is an act of fraud because the ticket is not actually your property despite your name being on it. Thus the school could request you be criminally charged. No good can come from that.

If you want to disappear, you'll have to pay your own way back.

It's a 12 hour flight from Vancouver to Inchon int'l airport. Depending on what route/airline you choose. That should give you a rough idea.
cheers

Well, what exactly do you want to do? And are you really being treated like dirt or are you simply having a tough time adjusting to the Korean method of viewing employees like dirt?

WB: FYI, i'm not even in Korea yet; i love my job in Canada (graphic designer) but am craving a bit (a lot) of travelling; so i guess i'm in my research stage, and, well, i'm researching a bit overboard perhaps? Are my scenarios getting a bit off the beaten course?
I guess from the majority of negative stories i'm being a bit paranoid, b/c i want Korea to be a great experience, and I'm an optimist, so bear with me and some of my outlandish questions.
As for being treated poorly when i do get to the ROK, i fiugre as long as i treat them with openness, empathy, and respect, they will do much the same to me (where's the emoticon for 'masked confidence'?)

ps-thanks for the flight time, Some Waygug-In.

Korea can be a great hub for travelling in Asia, but I dunno if you'd want to work in Korea purely for travel purposes.

Lots of cool places to visit inside Korea.
You can also travel all over asia from here.
But, its not Canada or the US.
Personnally I love it here, but some don't. Experiences vary and you can save yourself a lot of hassle by doing some thoughrough research before coming over and finding the job that works for you.
Korea is not a working holiday, teaching means full weeks of work so depending on your schedule you might only be able to really travel at the end of your contract, travel outside Korea that is...

It is a great experience, but it is not a vacation. If you make the most of it, you can go travelling in town. I'm in Seoul and there is something to see every weekend. As far as reciprocal openness empathy and respect...lets just say, they have a different way of doing things. You are an employee and foreigner. If you are not used to it, it can be hard. But if you are at an ok school, you get used to it and it isnt terrible.

I say go for it...but be prepared. Really check out the school through other foreign teachers at that school. And research the area you are going to be in.

Good luck.

Oh, and yeah, if you are gonna bail...pay your own way.
