I'm having trouble controlling the uploading speed limit on uTorrent.

No matter what settings I try, it keeps shifting up, often getting to 2x to 4x the download speed, or more. While I don't mind being generous, I would like to be able to control this, and the program offers ways to do this, but they don't work.

Anyone have any ideas what I could be doing wrong? Or more precisely, how I can do it right?

I am using uTorrent v1.7.5, which I believe is the latest.

Thanks!

Thanks. That worked, sort of.

In case anyone else needs this, it's:

Options

Preferences

Connection

Upload

Then, make sure the "automatic" box is not checked.

I guess I might have checked it at some point when I was experimenting with settings.

Once I unchecked the automatic, then you enter the number, such as 200 or 400, etc.

I kept right clicking on the icon in the tray to set the upload limit, and it would stay for a couple of minutes and then shift upwards -- apparently because the automatic setting overrode it.

Now, with the help of the speed graphs, I can keep the upload at an appropriate ratio to the download, without overtaxing my hard drive with turbo uploading.

Thanks!

Who cares what your upload speed is? This is Korea...no caps, no worries. Heck, if everyone capped their uploads, there would be no fast downloads.

My uploads frequently out pace my downloads by a healthy margin as well, but hey...good for sharing, right?

If I remeber, limiting upload, limits download as well, though I may be wrong on that. Still, be generous with your bandwidth...it costs you nothing extra.

Yes and no.

When I used bittorent, there was no way I could see to adjust my upload rate on the fly. And on some very large files, like 15 GB or more, it seemed like to high an upload rate interfered with downloading.

With uTorrent, you can monitor graphically your total upload and download rate, and adjust it on the fly.

I wonder whether increasing your upload rate can increase your download rate, but I am not sure. I suspect there is a limit, though, and if your upload is too high with lots of files, it could still lower the download rate.

I don't mind having a higher upload rate than the download rate, in general. But there's tiimes I want to cool it, such as when I am burning a disk and don't want to keep the hard drive too busy.

Also, it has occurred to me that if you upload too fast, the peers could turn into seeds too quickly, then drop off before you can finish your download. On the other hand, there are times when you want to help this along.

So the uTorrent program, while being less than intuitive, offers a lot more control, which in the end allows you to upload more generously.

I think some of the slow torrents are due to people using something like bittorent and being afraid to set the upload rate too high.

But what do I know?

I might add that the uTorrent webpage was less than helpful, and the entry on the subject was pretty worthless. So thanks again!

If you read my earlier posts you will see that options suggested, right clicking on the icon in the systray, were precisely what were not working.

You can change the upload speed that way, but it won't stick IF the preferences for upload speed is set to "automatic."

Try it.

Once you uncheck automatic, then the several other options for setting upload rate work fine.

I must say uTorrent is a huge improvement once you get the hang of it. (I have it set up with Firefox as the browser for searching torrents.) It allows you to automatically shift over a specified number of completed torrents for continued seeding. That's where uploading speed does the most good for others.

At any rate, thanks for the help!
