EVERYBODY and their little sister has been to Thailand for God's sake.
You're not exactly breaking new grounds in travel by going there.
It's become a tourist Disneyland with plenty of tourist traps for your package tourists. You got your eurotrash familes, the footbal hooligans from britain, lowbrow russians, and sex tourists from all over.
Then you have your canadian english teachers who think their the shiznit because they've been to Thailand and now they can brag to their friends in their lame canadian towns. 
Koreans go by the dozens and patrol Pattaya/Phuket shopping malls proud and tall. After golfing and dinner, the korean men hit the bars for some action...
It used to be an interesting place, but Thai's have learned to package their culture/attractions into a nice little package to sell to the hordes of tourists that come everyday.

Dude, when i hear people talking like this, i say to them ask yourself one question what are you doing? If you dont like it then get out. It seams very simple to me.
In regards to where have you been, myself personally, more places than youve had hot dinners.

I must add that outside of Bangkok, the people are very friendly and accommodating for the most part and even smile a lot. I sense no xenophobia or extremely awkwardness like I do when traveling in Korea. The only awkwardness is when you are trying to speak with someone who can't speak English which is understandable that you just have to improvise, but they are usually very friendly and a smile goes a long way when meeting these people.
I think I would love living and teaching in Thailand outside of Bangkok, but the money part just doesn't make sense to me though it is doable. The problem is I need to be stacking while I am at it so I have something for my future. I met several older American guys in Thailand who get nice sized veterans pensions and have businesses such as a bookstore/bar. Yes, a roadside bar and bookstore combined! LOL
I was warned in a jokingly way by all the foreign teachers I knew in Korea that I would just fall in love with Thailand and probably never come to Korea again. I know I will need to do some more time in Korea for that good money and savings to take more awesome trips. |

The bigger the smile, the more they hate you.
The Thais are said to have about 13 different smiles, all meaning something different.
Reminds me of the Japanese who also smile at you but at the same time want to cut your head off! |

Thailand is a great place to go to if you're seventy and looking for a sixteen year old....
In fact a friend's marriage just broke up because he'd been doing a Thai teenager (who spoke no English) for two years.
I won't be rushing back there any time soon. Better beaches two hours from my home in Australia. Less pushy people just about anywhere but India. Similar culture but better food and nicer people in Malaysia. |

FWIW, I recently got back from pattaya, the split was pretty even between those in the 18-35 and the 35+ age group. |

Exactly. Bangkok is interesting for like a week, then the smog/traffic, the heat, the filth (puddles of scum on the sidewalk exuding a smell so sickly you can actually taste it), the whores, the touts, the shitty street food (when you start getting low on cash), and the general money hungry attitude of that city gets old fast. I lived there for over a year, and while it was interesting at times, I think day to day life there was more exhausting than anywhere else I`ve lived. The people can be ostensibly friendly, but are often just grating and in your face.
It is the only city I`ve ever lived where I mostly just wanted to stay inside my apartment all day with the air-con cranked, only venturing out in the evenings when the streets are not so choked with traffic and the air so bloody smog-infested (usually I like going out and about for walks etc. but not in BKK).
As for the rest of the country outside BKK, except for the nice beach resorts (not cheap), it`s pretty well poor as hell. Some people dig camping up in Issan, I sure as hell wouldn`t (just a visit to see the country side is nice though). |

Nah, most Japanese actually do want foreigner (or at least white) friends (for status if nothing else), but they are not big on associating with complete strangers. Breaking the ice tends to be harder. |

| Bangkok is a gnikcuf great city! I generally avoid khao San Bcuz its backpacker hell, but i love the vibe of the city. Im at coffee bean in Kuala Lumpur as we speak. KL is cool too, but doesnt come close to BKK |

definitely a no brainer that thailand has "been" the place to be. however, with the USD exchanging at sub 30 baht lately, my idea of paradise just might start changing. and for those of you out there with the "there's more to thailand than just its affordability" attitude, you've obviously never experienced thailand WITH money in your pocket. sure, thailand is magical in many ways but being able to experience that magic is due largely in part to how cheap thailand has been in the past. let the flaming begin.
