I'm planning on going to Thailand with my girlfriend in the 1st week of March and staying about 6 nights.

We want to stay on an island and just chill out (in whatever sense of the word). We've never been and have no idea which island to go to. Seems like Phuket, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are the main places, but when I looked at their maps, they seem huge with many many beaches!

We don't want to be around hordes of tourists, would like to stay close to a reasonably quiet beach and relax, have spas, swim maybe dive, eat good food and explore. The idea of staying in some luxurious resort sounds appealing, but a bungalow with aircon is really all we need. Any suggestions on where to go/stay? Phuket looks awesome but then again so do pics of all places!

Koh Chang, I think it is still relativly newish and not quite as crowded as the rest. I went to Ao Nang beach in Krabi last time and it was small and pretty quiet. There aren't any dens of ill repute there that I know of either.

I like Phuket, but it's not really a chilled out place. Kamala beach or Bangtao are OK though.

I think Ao Nang beach in Krabi would meet your requirements - its quiet, beautiful nature and nice people. They are a couple of chrome pole places but they are not in your face.

Krabi is a bit to the south of Phuket. In Ao Nang there are a few Eurpean food restaurants as well as some good local and seafood places (don't eat at the sushi place it sucks). Of course they have my favorite restaurants, the ones on wheels. You can go on dive trips, kayaking trips, fishing trips, or you can rent a boat for a day (~$35-50) and visit the uninhabited islands in the area.
