Depends on the chip.
Most modern modchips will add all sorts of features to your PS2.
Region free DVD is notable (this is NOT standard on PS2's), the ability to play imported PS1 and PS2 games (NOT standard) and the ability to pay "backups" (wahahaha just another word for "pirated") PS1 and PS2 games.
The Messiah2 chip comes highly recommended, over the Magic3.

I believe that there's still an issue with playing DVD games from PAL-standard regions. I don't think the mod will help with that. Gord? |

>. I'd like to know more about this too. I'm looking to buy a unit at present but am unclear whether eg if my brother sends me games from Canada i can play them on a unit purchased here in Korea.
Are there any English games available here in Korea ???
Where do we go & how does one get a chip installed ??? According to one of these postings, the messiah chip sounds like the best way to go.
Thanks. |

Go to Yongsan and wander around the underground part with all the phones, there is a ps2 vendor there that will sell you a chipped ps2. he will ask US or Korean System (go with the korean as you can always get a transformer or change out the power supply when you go home).
The chipped systems will play games from any region as well as backup *cough* copy *cough* games.
Don't forget to buy the region free DVD as well.
If you pm me I will tell you a really good place to get backup DVD and CD ps2 games. |

I think a lot of smaller electronics shops that sell PS2 (especially shops in places like Yongsan) will put the chip in for you. Just keep in mind that once the machine has been opened (and the seal on the back has been broken), your warranty is void. |

i have a korean machine and the chip allows me to play foreign games. you can get it in yongsan. when you buy the ps2 ask the vendor to hook you up. if he can't then move on to the next guy. eventually someone will fix it up for you. it is fairly common in yongsan |

My advice is dress casually, don't wear a suit. |

i'm not sure here but i think mod means modified. i don't know what the actual name of the chip is.
it isn't the one that needs a cd to boot. don't get that one, it's pain in the arse.
i'm not much help here. i don't know the name of the chip. i just went and i let them hook it up. |

As I mentioned before, I recommend the Messiah2 chip for PS2. The Magic3 had some issues when I installed so I upgraded to the Messiah2.
