U.S. Still Rates S. Korea as Sex Tourism Destination

The U.S. Congressional Research Service still rates South Korea as a major Asian destination for organized sex tours in a recent report entitled "Trafficking in Persons: U.S. Policy and Issues for Congress."

In the report issued last week, the CRS lists South Korea as a primary Asian destination for organized sex tours, alongside the Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong. By citing Indonesia and Taiwan as secondary destinations for organized sex tours, the report suggests prostitution in South Korea is more serious than in these two countries.

An official with the South Korean Embassy in Washington said, "We're making all-out efforts to present accurate information on Korea to politicians, government officials, academics and experts in the U.S. It is sometimes possible that accurate information on the reality in Korea is not delivered. We'll take a proper countermeasure after finding out the truth first."

Obviously the Americans who wrote the report havn't themselves been to any of the red light (pink light) districts themselves. As soon as they see a Non Korean the chants of Oppa Oppa mysteriously stop.
In the Korean pecking order even the hookers have higher status.

Goldmember, when I was examining your underwear (sorry, I couldn't resist), I noticed that England kind of looks like an old woman's profile facing to the right. With Picasso-esque *beep* and a weird sweater.

Do you agree?

Korea's an exporter of wh*res, not an importer of Johns. I think this is where the report on 'trafficing' may be mixed up.

Yeah, Korea is definitely a departure point, but often (I suspect) only for the more enterprising of the bunch.

Korea is losing its best and most talented.

And then they'll hide it.

they say over 1 million women working in the sex industry in korea..
of course 999.000 dont accept foreigners but still.. high quite a lot of sex workers for a clean country... not to mention how bad the kidnapping use to be in korea in the 70's 80's and early 90's for sex traders.. and forced labor workers this goes for males and females not only in the sex trade..
korea had a very bad reputation for this.. still does really..

We all know there used to be a lot of foreign-based prostitution here. Maybe this study only looked at people's perceptions rather than where they were going. I doubt Korea has the attraction to sex tourists that the South Asian countries have, although it still has that reputation from the past.

I had a look at the actual report.

http://assets.opencrs.com/rpts/RL34317_20080110.pdf

On Page 12, you'll find this:

Quote:
Australia has been a prime source of sex tourists in Asia but is also one of the countries that has done the most to end the practice. The Australian government has developed stringent laws that give authorities extraterritorial jurisdiction over crimes committed abroad by Australian citizens.25 The Philippines, Thailand, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong are some of the primary Asian destinations for organized sex tours. Indonesia and Taiwan are secondary destinations.

In other words, it's only described as a destination for Australia, not the world.

And then on Page 19, you'll find this:

Quote:
Tier 1 is made up of countries deemed by the State Department to have a serious trafficking problem but fully complying with the statutes minimum standards for eliminating trafficking.
< ... >
Tier 1 includes Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malawi, Morocco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

In other words, South Korea is in good company (with Canada and others) because it is acknowledged to be trying to solve the problem.

And the article below strongly suggests that the direction of human trafficking is, in fact, going from South Korea to Australia, and not the other way around.

Korean Sex Workers Look for Greener Pastures

Korean sex workers are moving abroad after new anti-prostitution laws made the worlds oldest profession more difficult at home, police say.
They are heading for the U.S., Canada and Australia, but some settle for countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan better known for export rather than import of sex workers. In North America, they apparently work in smaller cities and towns as well as big urban centers like Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC and Toronto. Hong Kong and Europe have recently been added to the list of destinations.

It seems that since the Special Law on Prostitution went into effect, the number of pimps and prostitutes going abroad is skyrocketing, a police officer said. But we dont have the full picture since most leave the country ostensibly for tourism.

Dedicated web groups are awash with advertisements drawing prostitutes abroad. A typical post on one such site boasting no fewer than 1,430 members - cafe.daum.net/zonesogeso - read, We know that in Korea these days, unemployment, the recession and the Special Law on Prostitution make it hard to earn even half of what you made before. Try a new start in the U.S. W8-10 million a month in a bar, W18-24 million a month in a massage parlor guaranteed. Advances possible. We take care of visas and bad credit.

There are dozens of groups on the Internet portal site Daum that hook up women looking for work abroad with pimps in the U.S., Japan and Australia.

Most of the sites require detailed member registration. To join one group (cafe.daum.net/goldgold486) with 320 members, applicants must indicate their height, age, weight and work experience and upload a genuine photograph.
