Seoul To Close Unification Ministry Handling North Korea: Report

SEOUL (AFP) - South Korea's next president is planning to axe the unification ministry, which handles North Korean affairs, in a government downsizing plan, a news report said Wednesday.

Yonhap news agency said president-elect Lee Myung-Bak's transition team had finalised a plan to streamline the cabinet by closing or merging five agencies, including the unification ministry.

The ministry has long served a key South Korean government agency in charge of Seoul's policy on North Korea.

A transition team spokesman refused to confirm the news report, saying there will be a formal announcement in the afternoon.

The total number of ministries would be reduced from the current 18 to 13 ministries under Lee's government, according to Yonhap.

That's unfortunate. They looked at what they could cut the quickest and probably didn't lend much thought to it. Hopefully the new government will take seriously relations with the North and put some effort into improving relations, rather then turn back time.

It is not unfortunate. It was a government agency that was nothing more than 'tribute' to the Dear Leader up north. It accomplished nothing. This is a good sign that the South is going to start acting like the bigger, richer and better brother.

Well Ya-ta, I think hell actually froze over yesterday. Believe or not, in another thread I said Steve McGarrett wasn't that bad.

Darn!

I thought this thread was going to be about Seoul closing the Unification Church ministry of Sun Myung Moon.

One can only hope.

The Ministry was run by inexperienced lap-dogs (Chung being a fine example), and it often had its own agenda.

It should be folded into MOFAT.
