At the beginning of this month my hagwon owner comes to me and says he's got a couple of kids (high school 17 and 15 ) that are going to sit in on my advanced classes for the month. I thought nothing of it cause the classes aren't full and they were only there to hear a real life native english speaker. Turns out that they're going to the states for a year as exchange students. I was just curious what you all thought on how this might change them or if it will change them since I'm still new to Korea and not fully acclimated yet. Oh, almost forgot the kicker, they're not going to some po dunk town in the middle of America, they're headed to Los Angeles.

I had one student who told me "I'm going to America soon, so I'm cramming on TOEFL questions." Not an exact quote, just how I remember the message. I told him if he wants to be ready to talk to people, throw out the stupid vocabulary tests and study how people communicate.

I've seen the same thing. I'll ask if they want to talk at the end of class, they shake their heads no and keep writing vocabulary words.

Why, unless they're infants they're already experts at communication.

i had a short term student who won a contest to be an exchange student in the US for three weeks. no doubt she will be fine: absolutely brilliant speaking wise. she has already passed the toefl. any nation would be proud to have a student like her.

Chances are, they'll end up spending all their time in Koreatown, won't learn much English, but will have a blast. That's the usual story of kids who go to LA. Then again, their parents might prefer that to one of my students who spent time in Vancouver, and returned with stories of running a grow op.
