That man led a weird life.
I also read that in his later years, he had some revolutionary idea (in his own head) to 'revive' the game. He'd setup a computer to change randomly the back order of pieces. He was so enthralled by this idea, that he kept mentioning it was the only way he wanted to play from then on out. |

Fischer Random Chess
On June 19, 1996, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Fischer announced and advocated a variant of chess called Fischer Random Chess, also known as Chess960, that is intended to allow players to contest games based on their understanding of chess rather than their ability to memorize opening variations.
Fischer Random was designed to remove the importance of opening book memorization. Fischer complained in a 2006 phoned-in call with a television interviewer that talented celebrity players from long ago, if brought back from the dead to play today, would no longer be competitive, because of the progress in memorization of opening books. "Some kid of fourteen today, or even younger, could get an opening advantage against Capablanca," he said, merely because of opening-book memorization, which Fischer disdained. "Now chess is completely dead. It is all just memorisation and prearrangement. It�s a terrible game now. Very uncreative."[85]

I'd like to start playing this - I like chess but I have no stomach for memorizing all the openings (or maybe I'm too dumb hahaha). |

Fischer was the quintessential self-loathing Jew, although no one really seems to know why for sure.
Brilliant in a limited sense, and a control freak, he refused to play for the championship and played when refused the request to play.
He was plain and simple one of these jerks who got his kicks being contrary for the sake of being contrary.
A man without a country by his own making. Good riddance. |
