I'm being told that if you don't start work for SMOE on March 1st, you don't get the job. Why is SMOE so strict on the start date? You would figure with the demand for teachers, they would be a little more flexible.

March 1st is the official opening day of school. Or March 2nd? as "Samil" is a public holiday. Obviously, it creates a good image, for a school, if there is a native speaker available from day 1. The reality is, that teachers are coming & going all the time, & you should check with SMOE, as to what vacant positions are available on a given date.

It's no coincidence, that the peak recruitment months, are March & September.

How do I check with SMOE? My recruiter, I won't mention the name, told me that SMOE makes no exceptions. You either start March 1st or you don't get the job. The reason I ask is that my current contract doesn't end til mid March and I wouldn't be able to start until the beginning of April.

That's the SMOE wants it to work, but I know people who have been able to start later than the start date. I've heard the same thing from SMOE, but they make exceptions when you play hard ball sometimes. They've even done some middle-of-the-semester hiring before.

March 1 is also after orientation, I think. Are you being let out of going to that travesty?

Explain your case to this email contact address, within SMOE:

[email protected]

"please email to Lois Choi For further information, or call 3999-367" (January 2006).

http://eng.sen.go.kr/ is the official website, but it's not working at the moment.

The worst they can say, is you must start on March 2.
You've nothing to lose by contacting SMOE.

"Footprints (Recruiters) is the largest supplier of teachers to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education." I'd contact them, too, even if they weren't my preferred recruiter.

My recruiter told me that everyone wants to work in SMOE so they can pick and choose anyone they want to work in the schools.

I was under the impression that SMOE had a shortage of Native Teachers. My recruiter, a reputable company, tells me otherwise.

Never believe anything a recruiter tells you.

If you are willing and able to start on exactly March 1, you increase your chances of getting that position and therefore his chances of collecting a commission from your being hired.

Good luck getting a timely email response, or even a vaild one that doesn't tell you to "ask your recruiter."

Also, the website is: http://etis.sen.go.kr/

March 1 = national holiday, no school
March 2 = Sunday, no school
March 3 = Monday, first day back and first day of actual classes.

So, exactly how do they think they are going to make the OP work on March 1st. Our master at my last uni tried to make us come in on March 1st, but we all told him to stick it, and slept in.

are you worried about the 1st being a saturday? don't because it IS a holiday and you'll get paid not to be there.

if you really need to start later - as in a couple of weeks or a month - just insist and make sure the recruiter is clear on your terms

SMOE has runners just like everyone else - they'll hire all year long but like everyone else prefers to put the teachers in the schools at the start of the term.

It''s no wonder SMOE have difficulty recruiting native teachers.

If they were more flexible with the timing of applications, they may recruit more teachers, has that occurred to them???!!! I really don't know how their minds work.

My contract with GEPIK ends in late April. If I can't work in a Seoul p.s. right after that, I will probably stay at the same school, to reduce the documents I will need to get ready.

Actually, I'm not aware of any schools in the US that are "more flexible." Mostly, if you want to work in a public school, or even a private one, you'd better be able to be there at the beginning of the school year.

This doesn't apply, of course, to unanticipated mid semester vacancies.

I don't know why Korean schools would be any different.

My recruiter is Footprints and they told me I need to start at the beginning of March. They said SMOE doesn't make any exceptions whatsoever and I should get a job with GEPIK if I want to start in April.

I also tried emailing Lois and the email was returned to me as invalid address.

Can anyone help me out?

Sounds like they are trying to intimidate you. Don't back down. They need youmore than you need them.
