|
|
I stumbled across a program that seems to solve the dilemma of playing region encoded DVDs on a computer. It is DVD43. It loads into the computer automatically on startup and sits there real quiet until needed, and then works in the background. Just insert a DVD, and you can play it on any player such as Windows Media Player, and region. Oh, and it's free.
I know VLC is a way around this, but this is another option. It has the advantage of not putting you in a position of accidentally switching the region setting on your DVD drive. You only get six switches, and then you are stuck with whichever is the last. If your default DVD player is not VLC, a person could accidentally switch your region.
Some people are not bringing their favorite DVDs with them to Korea because of the region encoding issue. And some people are not bringing DVDs bought in Korea back home because of the same issue. Just wanted folks to know there are ways around this. |

I use DVD Region-Free, which is pretty much the same deal, and is free... for a given value of "free". |

Seriously, why would you not just use VLC? |

Seriously, did you bother to look at the information about what DVD43 does?
Do I need to spell it out for you? |

Another suggestion is just buy an external dvd. Have your internal one set for region 1 and the external for region 3. A solution to think about for home when you haul back your region 3 dvds. |

This is exactly what I'm doing. I don't like to install any extra software that I don't need and a 2nd drive is so cheap that it's just easier.

I'm thinking like a laptop owner or someone with very fat fingers who isn't good a putting thing in things. I have a hard time getting CDs back into their cases.
Also like, your desktop might not be near your TV. I'm assuming you want to eventually watch them on your TV. Of course, I guess one could then simply investigate how to make stand alone DVD players multi regional. |

Many (perhaps most) DVD players can be made region-free by typing in a code on the remote control. Ironically enough, the Chinese made ones seem to be the easiest to hack. |

I just bought a new DVD player, a Divx, CD, DVD player. This new kind [well, new to me] will play absolutely anything. Put photos on a DVD or CD and watch them.
And I used to watch movies on my computer but now I simply put downloaded video files directly on a DVD and stick it in the DVD player.
You can even increase the size of the picture.
And interestingly, I took it to Canada and it also plays DVDs from that region. [I have a transformer and plug adaptor for use in canada.]
It's at Hi-mart and is only 80,000 won
The thing about DVD regions will disappear in the future for computers as well as DVD players. On the computer, I have always found that I can play any DVD, rented or downloaded on the GOM player |
