Ah, I remember when stuff like this used to surprise me too- the Hill, the red light district at Yongsan, the Anmas, the Room Salons, the Sexy Bars and the Business Clubs. I've never done anything but window shopping (really), but I'm used to it all now.
I guess it shocked me because for my first full year in Korea I believed Koreans when they told me their culture was sexually conservative. Now when they tell me this I list off all the above ways you can get sex for money.
Often they're shocked that I know about it, and seem a little ashamed of it. But hey, they can't get offended, can they? After all, it is a part of their culture, right? Korea is the Republic of Prostitution
(and before someone says prostitutes are a part of Canada too, let me say that it's not nearly as widespread [see the above link], and at least we don't hide the fact from foreigners while pretending to be conservative) |
just an observation, why is it that korean newspapers are held as credible when they report something critical of korea but passed off as biased when they're critical of non-koreans?
Like this and other issues highlighted on this board, I won't hold my breath waiting for anyone here on dave's esl, taking any action or raising a finger on this issue outside of korea.
Has anyone ever, before coming to korea, posted on a web site besides dave's about the some 500,000 eastern european sex slaves estimated to be working in western europe and 100s of thousands of sex slaves working in the US?
also, koreans do admit they have prostitution. The article you posted belies your main point that koreans are oblivious to this.
How big is the sex industry in the US and western europe? answer, pretty big. Prostitution is an international problem involving gangs and multinational crime organizations. Your trying to focus on korea but that is not really helping these women. Most countries ignore this issue.
Pres. Roh actually passed stricter laws on prostitution, which you didn't mention.

25,000 SEX SLAVES ON THE STREETS OF BRITAIN
By Jeff Edwards And Daniel Boffey 19/10/2005
AT least 25,000 girls and women have been smuggled into Britain and sold into the booming vice trade, a Mirror investigation reveals.
The UK is regarded as a key market. The Home Office believes between 2,000 and 6,000 women are brought in each year. Many are made to have sex with up to 30 men a day.
Police say there could even be up to 50,000 women from every continent working in most cities.
Throughout Europe 500,000 women have been forced into prostitution, the National Organisation of Migration estimates
http://www.shoutwire.com/comments/20930/Sex_Slaves_A_Harsh_Reality
Sadly, traffic commonly spans from Eastern Europe and Asia and flows into Italy, France, Germany, Britain, Canada, and the United States. It is a crime that knows no shame and apparently, no boundaries. Why isnt more being done to address this issue?
some facts on prostitution in asia:
http://www.uri.edu/artsci/wms/hughes/apmap.htm
and as I wrote before go to any sex store in the west and they advertise prostitutes in all the magizines. They are on the internet and in the telephone books. It's just more hidden in North america. |
I know you got the famous "red light district" in Amsterdam. I guess everyone thinks prostitution is OK because its in Europe. Europeans are just held to a different standard than the rest of the world. |

Are there places to purchase sex at just about every single subway, bus, train station in Europe?
It's much more condensed in South Korea. Perhaps this has to do with population density.
It just seems to me that prostitution is more prevelant in South Korea. Or at least they have more options here on how to purchase this transaction |

It wasn't fictional, but reread my story. I did mount up and man up! Here are cut and pastes by posters on another website. I think they must be talking about the same house that I encountered, since they're also writing about Miari:

but before that, getting to the place was hell. i got tackled, gagged and dragged by two ajumas into their establishment. the girls inside then stole my shoes and cornered and trapped me. there was nothing i could do but to just sit there and be calm. i didn't even kick or scream this time. i seriously sat in the corner for 20 minutes being begged for sex, tortured and then finally bribed if i wanted to leave without f*cking one of their ugly ass girls.
i was seriously turned off and wanted to go home. as i was finally leaving due to their exhaustion, the ajumma was surprised and confused as if she were convinced these tactics were going to coerce me to have sex with one of her girls. that was when one of her girls turned to her and said that it was my "mannerism". my MANNERISM? i don't get it. granted i grew up in the states, i am korean and i've never heard this. can someone more experienced or living here longer than me shed some light as to what kind of mannerism i was supposed to show if i wanted to respectfully leave there. or was it that i was supposed to be disrespectful? i've seen other koreans get tackled here but is that what they do to say no?
i've tried the yogurt trick and every other tactic out there but these ajummas can sniff you right away. you gotta remember they were ex-wh0res and know this business in and out. they know exactly when a guys done it or not. i love miari but this is getting to me. i love the kamps back in nyc because its a huge room and you can sit there, drink a beer and pick the girl you want at your... |

I need a good method of dodging the ajummas at miari. I keep getting tackled by them, dragged in and tied down. They've ripped the buttons off my jacket and steal my shoes. I love the service there, but getting to the girl you want is like playing red rover. I've tried football rushing techniques, called them names and tried to cold treatment. Nothing seems to work. Does anybody have any good tactics in terms of getting past these washed up wh0res? they are relentless and they are starting to not be fun anymore. |

First of all, sorry my english is not that good. Went to Miari first time today (Friday). Holy sh** that sucked. Arrived at around 10pm, went in the RLD and was directly approached by some ajuma. She took me inside, there were just two ugly girls, one of that a little fat. She offered a "special price" 60. 000. I said I will come back at a certain time, she forced me to promise it with that korean handshake style. Anyway I didn't return. Checked out at least 10 shops, but none of them had girls I like! Wtf? One ajuma even pushed me in her shop, tried to take off my shoes very aggressively after I said I'm going to leave and will maybe comeback later. (the attempt to take off my shoes were more kidding that serious, but still very aggressive) Anyway, holy sh*t, got almost raped there since One of the girls tried to take off my shirt while the ajuma was trying to take off my shoes.
Anyway, managed to get out. |

Went to Miari around 9:00. I have noticed that the girls are all locked in behind the the curtains and are not available for seeing. The ajummas grab, pull, and are very aggressive, and will pull you in forcefully to f*ck her girls. Be careful, I was locked in and was not allowed to go out. From my observation, the girls there are nasty and plain. I do not ever plan on going there ever again. From my short stay there, I did most of my mongering at 588, but the quality is so-so, not good as it used to be. |

Again all the hyperbole . Prostitution is in the gross majority a victimless crime . There is no decent moral argument against it .
For me it is against my taste and preference to sleep with women who are only doing it for money . But I would never judge what anyone chooses to do with their money or body in private , so long as they aren't hurting anybody .
With that said real sex slaves do exist and are subject to many abuses . But I'd be careful with these statistics because a majority of these women Know exactly what thay are getting into and do it willingly . Of course its to their benefit to play the victim and pretend they didn't know when asked or questioned by a third party . I only mention that for the sake of balance....it's far healthier an idea to assume the worst when people are getting hurt of course . |

a troll is "someone who posts controversial messages in an online community with the intention of baiting other users into an emotional response."
is my question going to make all the boys cry?

Try a 'host bar'. Usually it's married women who go to these places and buy the guys working there drinks. They sit and drink together, and things go from there...
I'm not sure if there's anything for women that's as explicit as there is with men- probably no red light districts for women. Not sure. But try a host bar. |

I'm sure male prostitution exists in Korea. Probably in a more discreet way though. In Thailand, Cuba, and Mexico I saw lots of older Asian and European women strolling hand in hand with strapping young lads that presumably weren't their sons or husbands. |
