I've just applied for an alien registration card and it'll be sent to me along with my passport soon.

My director is saying that he needs to take both along with my degree to the ministry of education for some reason or other.

I have good reason to believe he wants to keep some of my documents ransom and would lie to acheive this goal.

Is this true about the employer needing to take all three documents to the ministry of education even after all the visa work including the alien registration have been taken care of?

Could be...but I'd make sure you go w/ him or her. Just make it crystal clear that you're not letting your PP outta your site.

Yep, it's true.

Give them up for one day. If you don't get them back by next day, give them hell.

Correct.

If you are teaching in Korea, even if you have an E2 visa, if you are not registered with the local education office you are teaching illegally.

Probably nothing to worry about. If you don't receive your passport back for any reason, call the labor department at 1350 on any telephone.

Yup, it's true. By the by, this is one of those rare situations where consulates will actually step in and yell at the Hagwon director, especially if they have your passport. Passports are considered property of a country, so you can get some help if it goes shady.

Better yet call your embassy. Your passport belongs to them, if your boss is not giving back your passport he is stealing from the embassy.

Don't call your embassy to make a fuss just yet. It may take a week (or more) to get your ARC card...and chances are that your ARC and passport will be sent directly to your boss. He will have to go to the MoE, or a local Office of Education...and show them both documents. I went with my boss; they need to make a copy of your arc & passport, and your boss has to drop off a few pieces of paper.

Just call the immigration office in a week or so and see if your ARC has already been sent off, and where they sent it to. Then give your boss a few days; or, do what I did and tell your boss that you need to be in possession of your passport, and that you'll go with him. Technically your boss shouldn't show your passport to anyone, because it's against some law (I'd imagine international law?) to use a passport that isn't yours.

Yeah, don't freak out yet. It's really easy for foreign teachers to be extremely paranoid here, but this is really an innocent situation. It has to be done and I've had it done twice for me so far. If you don't have your papers back in a week, talk to your director. If you don't have it the week after that, tell your director you're going to talk to your consulate the next business day. Seriously, don't make a fuss where it isn't necessary.
