Considering the number of dummies who have gotten busted in Korea as well as the number of dummies who continue to ask about drug policy/testing in Korea on Dave's alone, I think this program is long overdue. |

That's just plain silly. You're talking about adults, the vast majority of whom are not engaged in any illegal activity. Subjecting them all to a lecture like a bunch of schoolchildren is demeaning and disrespectful.
Korea makes it very clear that drug use will not be tolerated. If you do the crime, you do the time. Just ask Cullen Thomas. But a mandatory-attendance lecture? Beyond ridiculous. |

Adults? If you were an adult you wouldn't be here teaching English. |

When you say native teachers, I assume you mean foreign teachers?
In that case, it's outright discrimination. Simple as that. Is attendance compulsory? Either way, I'd refuse to to go.

That's the spirit. Every foreigner in Korea should be treated as a potential criminal/junky just because of a few idiots.
You really are a tool.

I've adopted a policy that I refuse to miss class for waegook-only events put on at regional levels. I'll call in sick and then make a miraculous recovery just before my first lesson is supposed to start and show up at school to teach. Unless, of course, it's to do clearly useful professional development (which will never happend for FTs in 5,000 years). |

when you say 'drugs', you mean illegal drugs, right? it's a shame they probably won't mention the dangers of nicotine and alcohol, which are clearly much more problematic drugs in korea... |

Yeah, it's freaking stupid IMO. The note I got said that attendance is mandatory and if you couldn't make it to the lecture then you had top contact that Serra girl by the 23rd (the lecture is on the 30th). I REALLY don't want to go to this thing, and might just play stupid and say that I couldn't find the building where it is. How the hell can I call in sick for it a week ahead of the actual stupid thing? I figure that I'll just say "f*** it" and not go. If they take attendance and then actually actually call my school, I'll figure something out, namely, I got lost.
I do NOT need a 90 minute lecture about drug awareness from a bunch of Koreans. |

Thanks guy.
Your input really adds to the discussion.
If they are going to put on a show like this, they should have the Korean teachers go as well. It's not like foreigners are the only drug users in Korea. |

The truly funny thing is that not so many people are on the fence about drug use. It's not like this is going to sway people one way or the other. The people who are going to engage in illegal activity are going to do it regardless of who tells them not to. In some cases it might actually make them decide to do it. The "drug user" or people who abuse drugs often have personalities that don't jive with authority. I know from personal experience.
I would look at it and say it is a work thing so I am being paid to go(hopefully it isn't in your time which would be really sh*tty). Enjoy the insanity and post some of the funny shi*t you are going to hear. I wouldn't be surprised if a screening of reefer madness is included in this presentation! They will probably go out and get sh*tfaced drunk after! |
