Hi,

So I was planning on leaving Seoul, traveling around Southeast Asia for three months or so, and heading up to China to do the Trans-siberian Railroad into Russia. Well, I started looking at the best embassy to get my Russian Visa, Cambodia or Thailand - and I find the rules have changed?? From what I understand you can no longer get a Visa outside your home country??? or a country that you have residency in for longer then 90 days - Korea would count, but you can't get your visa more then 90 days in advance and I will not be in Russia in that time frame.

anyone know anything about this? or how to get around it? I thought about trying to get a business visa in Cambodia, but you have to show residency for more then 90 days so that would require a 6 month business visa in Cambodia and I don't think that they issue that without proof you actually have a job or something.

Any advise, or suggestions?

I've heard conflicting views on this new policy.

My suggestions:

1. The absolute most straightforward guaranteed option would be do Russia first and then the South Asia countries second. That would eliminate the problem totally and you could get a tourist visa issued in Seoul easily.

2. Get a *double-entry* Russian tourist visa in Seoul, enter by the 89th day and then if you find that you still need more time in South Asia afterwards, you can go back for a second trip and then re-enter Russia.

3. I think even with the new rules, it will still be possible to get a tourist visa in South Asia. In the off chance one embassy refuses, the next may not. Because there is no consistentcy in implementation of visa rules. (But keep in mind the *invitation* may also be subject to an expiry date, they often are).

4. If you really get stuck (especially in China) you could try using an agency. They will know the local conditions (and each Russian embassy is a law unto itself) and will most probably be able to get it one way or another.

As I understand it, the new visa laws apply only to business visas.
