Is it just me .... (I know this always gets me in trouble, but...)
Is it just me or is this the most split thread ever? |

Panther (Austin too): This is a messageboard. It's not the constitution. Rules are vague because they need to be. Mods and users alike need some wiggle room. If this wiggle room wasnt there, you, me, and almost all of the regulars wouldnt be here. |
Part of the reason why we are having this discussion is because the rules are too vague and thus have caused problems.
I don't see why the rules need to be vague, unless they are not well defined.
By defining things better less "wiggle" room will be needed.
I am only trying, with regards to the rules, to be constructive and point out concerns that I have and that I feel are shared by others. |

By "defining things better", you are removing the wiggle room.
It also allows users to slap the mods in the face when they dont act they way they think they should. |

Hello everybody.
The Song Titles Game needs to be smashed, as does the Who Will Win The Rugby World Cup (when it's finished; bye-bye boomerangs) and many more threads! It will (might?) make the search function more effective.
Goodbye everybody. |

That my first reaction as well. I mean that I'd never thought of that before. But I tested it out and the search function is as fast as ever, and it only allots one entry given to 'songs title' thread. Meaning you'll quickly bypass it without thought or notice. |

Beckerson,
Thank you for addressing the original point of my post.
When a mod comments on other posters (while acting as a user), the mod undermines his/her ability as a moderator. Impartiality is thrown out the window! |

Austin you fail to realize that when a moderator is involved in a thread he automatically takes himself or herself out of moderating that thread to remove any perception of bias in the thread.
When I was a moderator we had this happen a number of times and when a subject would become contreversal, another mod would be asked to take over looking at the thread. I know for a fact as I have been asked to do this and have asked others to look at threads I've been involved in and when I took actions on a thread I was involved in I was rightly critcized by the other mods
to imply that because a moderator is involved in a thread that that mod is active in any decision involving it or becomes less unbiased is aboslutely ludicrous. There are enough moderators here to allow unbiased decisions to me made on all topics here. |

Rudyfly,
I was not speaking about a moderator actively posting in a thread as a user. I understand and accept what you have stated. However, I was referring to moderators voicing their personal feelings/opinions about users, when acting in the capacity as a moderator.

While my own feelings for SCSA are ambivalent at best, enough of the trash talk.
Like I said, the question has been answered. If you have anything else to say to anybody, do it via PM. |
Are you asserting that the above should be allowed?
Again, why permit moderators to publicly voice their opinions about a user, when users can not publicly voice their opinions about moderators?
An answer to the above would be appreciated.
On another note, do you really expect people to believe that if I called a moderator (acting as a user) something derogatory, that they would not hold a grudge later (heck, it happens even without "name-calling")? |

Well, considering that impartiality is impossible unless you're a robot, but an attempt to remain objective isn't, I'd say you're barking up the wrong tree. |

"Publicly" and "opinions" are the key words here. It needs to stop happening from both directions.
And when a Mod (posting as a Mod or User - Not sure there is a difference if the poster is identified as a Mod) does it, it calls into question the impartiality and objectivity of the Mod. Unfortunately, it also tends to reflect on all the Mods.
To the extent it has been happening, it needs to cease. |

What is wrong with these threads. While not contributing to Korean matters iot does let people post according to other interests. If i recall buddy Bradley you poster a lot on the World Cup thread until SA got beaten. Sounds like sour grapes to me. Also, you have participated in many useless posts and contributed to flame wars.
BTW: I think the mods do a great job. It is a tough job to be impartial. there is a saying that goes "YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYBODY ALL THE TIME". My posts have been treaded on by mods, i'm all cool. its their job and don't forget, they have VOLUNTEERED TO DO IT to SERVE YOU. If it wasn't for them it would be like koreanesl.com. Come to think of it, I'm thankful for moderators. |

Beckerson,
Are you finally capitulating and admitting that it is impossible for the moderators to remain fair and unbiased in the application of the policies to all users?

Again, since it is finally being acknowledged, would you moderators consider changing your policy to prohibit yourselves from publicly voicing your opinion/feelings of users?
Thank you, Mr. Kalgukshi! |

And then they will just make a sock so they can post whatever they want and you will never know it. [/retires sock again] |

R.A.T. makes a good point. This isn't a debate about moderators publicly expressing opinions, as much as some are portraying it as such, but whether moderators should use "sock puppets" or not.
When moderators use(d) "socks", we were able to express our personal opinions without having to worry that what we say might be taken by some as a reflection on or representative of the moderators as a whole (Mr. K's point). No matter how many frigging times we say here, "our views are our own only", people will still pick at us for expressing our opinions - on issues, on relations with other users...
In many ways we're the easiest targets on the board.
Had steroidmaximus written the "ambivalent" comment using a "sock", Austin nor anyone else would ever have known the opinion was coming from a moderator, and he wouldn't have it thrown in his face half a year later. Most of us *don't* use socks, though we have no rule against it. I used to, but stopped after being "outed", and because I began to feel that there was something inherently dishonest about using one. Perhaps this discussion will lead to me reconsidering that decision.
