I've just got the subject access application form from the police via email.
I remember from before, when you fill the form in, you need to send an original document with the form to verify your I.D.
If that's not possible, you have to show a copy of an original document to verify your I.D., to someone of social standing e.g. a police officer, solicitor, teacher etc.
I'm in Korea, so for any Britons on here, what would you do?
Would you send a copy of an original document to family back home and get them to take it to a person of social standing, or would you choose the option of sending an original document with your form to the police?
Last year, I remember I went to my local police station and an officer verified a copy of my I.D. Now, I'm in Korea, so that's a bit difficult to do. |

I supplied a copy of my passport - a photocopy - and then sent it to my family who enclosed some banks statements. This was all that was required by Avon & Somerset police although I know some other forces require it to be countersigned. |

UK police forces are legally obliged to provide a 'subject access check' within 40 days of receiving the application at a cost of GBP10.00. Great!
But...
I've just learned today from Korean immigration that the document must also be legalised by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (www.fco.gov.uk). This costs GBP27.00 and can be done the same day over the counter or over about four weeks by post.
The FCO's policy is that they can only return documents to the person who sent them. They do not forward them. This rules out the quickest receipt by having them posted Police -> FCO -> Korea. The time-consuming alternatives seem to be EITHER Police -> UK home -> FCO -> UK home -> Korea OR Police -> Korea -> FCO -> Korea.

So if you're a British citizen with no UK address or family in the UK, what do you do?
As an analogy, I couldn't find my UK drivers license and they wouldn't send me a new one because I don't have a UK address anymore. I haven't even been there for 5 years.
Am I screwed, or is there a way around this? |

I've emailed the police in the U.K. to ask if there is anything I can show them online as I.D. to avoid needing to send copies of documents to family in the U.K., so they can get it verified by the police, in person.
I'm waiting for their reply. On my FCO thread, I talk about an email I sent to them, as regards where the FCO can send the legalised criminal check.
They said they can send it anywhere in the world. |

I've recieved my local subject access check.
However Does one still need a national check? or is one from your county enough? Because they said they would forward an additional national check, but its taking way too long to arrive.
Also, has anyone had to have their crc apostilled? If so, did they use this? How did it go?

Julius - I was told by GEPIK if I re-sign with my p.s. in May I would need an apostilled crim. check and med. check.
I have contacted the apostile website you've cited, and they said to me they can get it apostilled and sent to me in less than 10 days, or something as quick as that.
They said depending on whether the subject access has a police signature on it, they will need to get it sent to their solicitors as well, which doesn't take any real extra time to get it all done.
For this current job I got the subject access form through the local police and that was sufficient to get the job, I had to get it done locally, so any additional national check I assume isn't required. The subject access states on it, the info was obtained from national records anyway, from memory. |

So is Subject Access check the only way to go now? Does anyone know if a Basic Disclosure will be acceptable? That's the one I have applied for. |

Thanks fromtheuk.
I got a local check- then they said they would send a national check from the PNC (Police national computer). However its been 2 months and still hasn't arrived.
but good to know the local check is sufficient. Mine is a simple letter stating no records fround against me.
But anyway, that sounds fairly positive.
Did they give your crim check back to you afterwards, or do they keep it? |

I never got my subject access form back, after I sent it to my recruiter. The same is true of all other documents e.g. notarised copy of degree.
My letter was also very basic, stating I have no record. |

I got this current job in May 07, so it was before all of these new regulations.
So, the consulate interview didn't exist. |
