McCain: The Myth of a Maverick

John McCain is one of the most familiar figures in American politics, a figure with great appeal to many. However, his concrete governing philosophy and actual track record have been left unexamined. Matt Welchs new book McCain: The Myth of a Maverick gives a flesh-and-bones political portrait of a man onto whom people project their own ideological fantasies. It is the first realistic assessment of what a John McCain presidency might look like. Welch lays out the root cause of the senator's worldview: his personal transformation from underachieving youth to war hawk, in which he used the "higher power" of American nationalism to save his life and soul. Please join us to discuss this new work on the day that New Hampshire decides the fate of Senator McCains enduring aspiration to attain the presidency.

Yeah, i read that somewhere else tonight. Yuck. That would be a really dumb move by McCain if he chose Lieberman as VP. That's more than just shooting yourself in your foot; that's straight-up political suicide.

McCain ought to choose either Romnny . Bloomberg or Tommy Thomson for VP.

In the end though he will probably choose Huck

That word used to have a very powerful meaning. It is the overuse of it in situations like this that diluted it.

Methinks it is not used enough, especially in light of the statements of those that express interest in attacking Iran.
It can't be because of nuclear proliferation- the NIE took care of that.
It can't be because of Iraq IEDs- investigations have already disproved that.

McCain is clearly pushing this war agenda forward by playing off of and fanning the flames of "Islamophobia" in order to draw attention away from his shoddy record, age, and weak economic knowledge.
We've seen it before with Bush, and we're seeing it again with McCain. After all, they are butt buddies as this picture shows.

Lieberman rules out running with McCain

Phew.

Quote:
WASHINGTON - Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent who nearly won the vice presidency as a Democrat in 2000, says there's no way he'll be Republican Sen. John McCain's running mate should McCain become the party's presidential nominee.

"No, I'd tell him, 'Thanks, John, I've been there, I've done that. You can find much better,'" Lieberman told The Associated Press during an interview Tuesday in his Senate office. "I'm not seeking anything else."

The Connecticut senator said he was unequivocally ruling out sharing the GOP ticket with McCain.

Damn, McCain looks old.

If he were to be nominated by Republicans, his VP nomination is going to basically have to 'run for President' as well in the Fall .

Excellent news from the East Coast: McCain took Florida; and Giuliani's campaign may be collapsing.

Quote:
(CNN) -- Sen. John McCain will win the Florida Republican primary, CNN projects based on election results and exit polling, edging out rival Mitt Romney.

The results could deliver a fatal blow to the campaign of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who was a distant third as results came in Tuesday night.

With 73 percent of Republican precincts reporting, McCain held a 36-31 percent lead over Romney. Giuliani had 15 percent of the vote, followed closely by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee who held 14 percent.

A top campaign official from McCain's camp has been in "ongoing discussions" with Giuliani's campaign about endorsing McCain's candidacy, a GOP official familiar with talks told CNN Tuesday.

A source close to Giuliani confirmed that discussions were taking place and said there is talk among the staff that an endorsement could come Wednesday in California...

Well then, Giuliani is throwing in the towel.

Ususally, one of my complaints is that our nominating process is so long and so drawn out, but there is one good result of it's length: people have time to assess and reject candidates. A few months ago, Giuliani was far ahead of everyone, and now he's at the bottom of the pile.

If IGTG's worldview of the importance of Dave's ESL Cafe is correct, then I think we would have to credit Kuros's thread for this development...

Seems that McCain has more lobbyists raising funds for him than Giuliani and Clinton combined:
