Are the English versions readily available for purchase in Korea? I don't want to waste luggage space if they are. (And yes, I'm a nerd who loves Harry Potter, deal.) |

Yes they are. Korean versions are everywhere and although you might not find an English copy in the first shop you go in, you certainly wouldn't have any serious problems finding English copies. I bought the English version of the fifth Harry Potter book in Korea a few years back. A word of caution though, the English versions are quite a bit more expensive here than you would pay back home. They won't bankrupt you but not cheap nevertheless...
I'm currently attempting the Korean version of the first Harry Potter book. I'm enjoying it but it's taking quite a long time... |

Yeah, they're everywhere in the bookstores with English-language books. Also, you can probably get them pretty easily at book swaps and such, too. Heck, I have all of them up for adoption because my friend left me her books and I'm too lazy to lug 'em somewhere that will buy them off of me I certainly don't want to be seen carrying every Harry Potter books ever written around with me on the train.
So yeah, if you're ever near the Incheon area, feel free to get them off my hands. |

I bought the whole set (before book 7 came out) from a used book store near Noksapyeong Station and What the Book? online. http://www.whatthebook.com/
I'd sell them, but I want to keep them in Korea for my next contract. |

On a related theme, if you're a fan of the Harry Potter movies they are regularly repeated on Korean TV, especially the first two films. Sometimes they are in English with Korean subtitles and at other times the voices are Korean dubbing. If you like Lord Of The Rings, you can see those movies even more.
Finally, the Korean pronunciation of Hermionie is horrible! If you hear a Korean talking about her, correct their pronunication at every opportunity! Spread the word! |

If you'll be living in Seoul they have just about everything you need book-wise at Bandi and Luni's in Jonggak Station. That's where I was patiently waiting the day that Deathly Hallows came out. |

The Korean pronunciation of Hermione isn't their fault actually, it's the bad romanization of her name. It wasn't until the fourth book that JKR specifically sounded out her name because so many people were saying it wrong, so it makes sense that in the three previous books, the translations were romanized improperly.
HOWEVER, I agree to correcting people who say it wrong! |

I skimmed through a Korean copy of a book once. How did they write Hermione? |

해리 포터(Harry Potter)
헤르미온느 그레인저(Hermione Granger)
론 위즐리(Ron Weasly)
루베우스 해그리드(Rubeus Hagrid)
알버스 덤블도어(Albus Dumbledore)
시베루스 스네이프(Serverus Snape)
볼드모트(Lord Voldemort)
No wonder the Korean versions of the books are so long. They stretch out 2 syllable names like Granger and Snape twice as long. |
