I'd like to preface this by saying that unlike a lot of people I am not asking for a free consult, repairs, or advice. I will pay for the services rendered.
Recently my PC crashed while I was playing Crysis (theres a connect somewhere, I think) and since the crash Ive been having several new problems that I didnt have before. I bought my gear at JooYeonTech (my first mistake in a series of several) so I had the guy come out and pick it up so he could reformat it. The thing is, Ive had more problems since the reformat than I ever did.
1. Buffer overrun: no clue as to why, but this is the reason given for why my Samsung MP3 software will not function. This wasnt a problem before the reformat.
2. My USB software has indicated that Ive got a high-speed cord attached to a low-speed port. This wasnt a problem before the reformat, Id just plug it in and it would recharge with no issues or annoying messages.
3. Since I added the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Mod Manager Ive been having several problems that Ive never had before. I dont know if theres a connection.
4. The version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Ive been using is one I downloaded off the Steam server and is authentic in every way. Its been crashing right, left, and center since I downloaded some of the mods and now I cant play the game at all because it freezes and crashes.
I tried all weekend to fix these rotten problems to no avail. Id really like to just pay someone more knowledgeable to come to my house and set things right. Do you know of a good PC doctor that makes house-calls? Ive come to rely on my computer for so many things and when it cant do those things it really screws up my weekend. Just PM me if you can help. Thanks. |

From the sound of it I would guess that whoever did your re-format did not properly re-install the motherboard drivers and device drivers for your system. It sounds like the USB2 drivers were not installed as well as some of the system bridge drivers for video, etc.
Do you have the mobo CD as well as your video card CD or a system restore CD along with your windows CD?

I don't know what a mobo is.
I guess the problems could be a result of not loading my drivers on correctly...it's driving me friggin crazy. I seriously don't want to deal with it any more...I'd rather just throw the whole thing out the damn window and buy a Mac. I've never seen so many damn problems and viruses.
Can't recommend a PC doctor? I can't do this stuff and I'm afraid I'll just screw everything up even more. |

You need to start from scratch again. Reformat and do it right. It helps to have all the latest drivers and bios before you even start. You may need the newest bios (this could be a problem with the motherboard)... and the motherboard companies do make updated bios.
Don't try to fix the windows crap...just kill the beast and start over...saves time. Trust me. |

I would like to recommend someone but I am not sure exactly where "Location: Belgian Waffle" is and you didn't give even so much as a city in the original post. |

Yeah. 'Repairing' Windows is a non-starter really. Fresh install is always best.
But, from the OP, it does sound like installing all the motherboard drivers would fix the USB thing at least.
Install all you have for the motherboard in the way of drivers. Then uninstall STALKER and re-install. |

If you're interested in helping a PM would be a good way to inquire about my location. This isn't the sort of environment I want to advertise any crumb of personal detail on, no offense to the frothing hoards on Dave's ESL Gulag.
Still having a hell of a time getting everything to work properly. It's really frustrating to have to fork over 100 bucks after hearing "I don't know" or "I can't actually fix it", and then the straw that set the camel bucking..."can you come and pick it up"? I would think in the interest of maintaining your return customer base that house-calls would not be something a "repair" person would be "too busy" to do. At least in the interest of establishing that something was done to improve the quality of performance. After working all day and paying for a service, I fail to see how I would be obligated to pick up equipment that needs to set up by someone who knows what they're doing. Grr.
Rant over.
How helpful are the tech forums at THQ going to be in getting this game to function? How common is it to get a corrupted game from the Steam server? Is is possible that Steam has updated a 2001 release to the extent that my Pentium 4 and Invidia 7600 GT cannot run it? Judging by the amount of bugs that remain, I'd have to say "no". |

I wouldn't have paid anything if it wasn't fixed, why? |

I think you should be a little more specific about the "new problems" that arise, such as the ones that come up after you installed STALKER. Also to note, STALKER is a game that is quite buggy in the first place...
Anyway the more specific/detailed you get with the problems, the more likely someone will be able to figure out the nature of the problem (random resets/reboots? screen discoloration? there are a ton of things "new problems" can be).
But like others have said, for some of your problems I think getting the latest BIOS and motherboard/chipset drivers would help a lot. If you don't know the model of the motherboard, check it and then go to the manufacturer's website and look for a BIOS and drivers download. If you purchased the motherboard in Korea, unfortunately you might have to go to a Korean website as some regions receive motherboards that others don't (for example, a "mobo" that is only sold in Korea/Japan/China but not any Western country ---> less likely for there to be English on website to help guide you to find the BIOS/drivers) |

Well, I trusted this person in the past and didn't get burned...but this time I feel a little scorched.
As I said, I have neither the ability or inclination to attempt to fix the thing myself. The game ran just fine until my crash, then it only worked for a little bit and then would open, and then crash when I tried to move or fire a weapon. The whole thing froze up and no amount of expletives or ctrl+alt+delete would do anything.
Prior to the crash I would get a temporary freeze in the Army Warehouse area, which I guess is due to the size and complexity of the map. Usually it would correct itself after a minute or two.
Apparently there are two power source cords on my video care, a NVidia 7600 GT (which was just replaced, as it was still under warranty) and the guy from JuYeonTech neglected to plug in both of them, causing it to overload and fail after a week of playing the game on "medium" graphics settings.
If you've ever played this game, particularly with the mods...it's quite fun and worth enduring some inconvenience from the bugs. I have to stay home and take care of my wife (she expecting) so I pretty much have to entertain myself at home most of the time.
I am not on this forum because I claim to have any significant knowledge of pc repair, I'm here because I'm seeking help. Suffice to say, this is why I cannot provide a more detailed account of my problems, save from an end-user's POV.
In short:
-buffer overrun, the result being that my MP3 software will not complete installing or run (virus or malware? we reformatted so presumably that shouldn't be a problem)
-can't link my pc to my TV to play video files, although I could do so with the same pc not so long ago (cord issue?)
-game crashes, only S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (I was able to run Crysis, if that tells you anything) and the whole computer freezes up and I can't do anything til I hit the reset button (graphics issues, no doubt)
-not experiencing any other graphics-related issues besides those two things |
