My friend noted it's probably because of difference in the way Koreans consume snacks vs North Americans. In North America, an open box of cookies won't last long. We'd eat a whole box at once. In Korea, a mother might break open the box, issue one cookie per person at the table and the box might have to last a week. Hence, the cookies need to be wrapped individually for longer freshness.

Surely you jest! Koreans chow down on snacks like they'll never see another.

Today. The packaging hasn't necessarily kept up.

wow. that's a helluva lot of food!
that's close to what my family of 3 ate in a month.

$500+ a week on food? wtf are they hooking it up to an IV and pumping it into their bodies 24/7?!

also noticed all the coke (and all the booze with the germans).

as to packaging in korea and japan, i think that it has to due with the humidity. if you have things individually wrapped, and you open one package in the summer, everything else is safe.
if you have a package like back in the states, things go stale fast.

when i get cookies from my mom, i pass as much out as possible, because any that are left in the box for more than 2 weeks start going bad...

Re: packaging.

Get your meal to go at McD's and you'll see what wasteful packaging is all about.

1 cola, two lids, two pieces of tape. In a small bag.

1 serving of french fries. In a bag.

1 burger. In a bag.

1 large bag to hold all the small bags.

And sometimes, but not always, one big plastic bag to hold the large paper bag.
