My laptop is loading up a blue screen that says "unbootable mount error."
I ran some diagnostics and it appears to an IDE failure with the harddrive. I should be able to boot up from the cd drive except...my cd-drive kicked the bucket last week.
Can I install xp to my usb hard drive and run it from that? |

You may be able to IF your system allows a boot from a USB device.
NOT all systems have that option in the bios.
Also you need to be aware that you will be missing all the device drivers for your laptop and will need to download them and save them to your USB drive as well so you can load them into windows. |

Most likely not. I think the OP meant installing XP on an external drive and then using it to boot his laptop. |
