So, I'm walking to work on Tuesday, my third day on my new job. I'm singing joyously one of my favorite songs from the musical "Oliver." A split second later I am lying on top of my ankles after taking a bad fall over a broken sidewalk. Should have been paying better attention. A man rushes over, gets me a chair, puts my feet up on a plastic crate and starts rubbing my legs and ankles. He was so kind and tried so hard to help.

I know something is definitely wrong when I can't walk one step without excruciating pain, but I manage to call my school, take a taxi to work and meet my manager outside. She sees I can't walk and offers to go to the hospital with me.

I had also called my minister (Bill George of Ulsan Simin Church). He comes and gets me, takes me to the hospital and then I get moved to the orthopedic hospital in an ambulance. My manager was grateful she wouldn't have to miss any classes.

Verdict - one broken and one sprained ankle. Fun, now I have soft casts on both legs, so my Lunar New Year holiday has been spent keeping everything elevated, watching movies and trying not to feel too sorry for myself.

The nicest thing of all? With no health insurance yet and me running out of money before my first paycheck, my church paid the whole bill. Wow. What a blessing.

The hospitals were wonderful. Kind and caring doctors and nurses, even when I screamed in pain as they moved both feet trying to determine the damage. The broken one hurts more than the sprained one.

It will be really fun to go to work on Monday! But I hope I will have a walking cast by Tuesday in time for school.

After everything I've been through here in Korea, this is the icing on the cake. I love my new job. Someone told me last week, "You know you have a bad job, but you don't know how bad until you get a good one."

It couldn't have happened at a better time, really, though I'm really ticked off at myself for not watching more closely while I was going. But at least I have five days to rest, something that doesn't happen to everyone.

Meanwhile, back at the studio (apartment, that is), I'm hoping everyone else had a better beginning to their holiday!

Sorry to hear that, but glad at least that it worked out okay for you. Take care and heal quickly!
