I've read that cell phones in Korea operate on the CDMA system and that you would need to rent a cell phone when you go to Korea. Would the cell phone I have in South Africa not work when I am there? I've also seen that I could put it on roaming and I would be able to send SMS's from my SA number. What does everyone do about cell phones when they are in Korea? I'd really like to keep the one I have now... any help??

The cell phone system here is CLOSED and foreign phones are NOT permitted to have local numbers.

You MAY be able to use your current phone on GLOBAL ROAMING but the costs are prohibitive.

Locally, you can buy a phone for as little as 30k won at one of the MANY, MANY, MANY phone shops. You can set it up as a "card phone" and pre-pay as you go. There is NO hookup fee, no contract and no other requirements other than having a passport. You get about 30 minutes of talk time for 10k won and can re-load it at any of the local phone shops.

Two things to add to ttompatz's comments:

1. There is no cell phone rental here.
2. Don't just use the pre-paid card for your phone. Get the pre-paid card for the phone service (to keep the service active) and also buy one of those international calling cards. Even for local numbers, the international calling card will be much cheaper than the phone service.
