yes! Laos is the forgotten gem in SE Asia. I went there a few times when living in Bangkok, and it was amazingly refreshing to go there. Vientiane is very nice and organized compared to Bangkok (some nice French architecture), the people are more honest (not trying to scam you at every turn), the food delicious and cheap (good French bakeries, and Beerlao, which is probably the best beer in Asia, minus Japan), and best of all it's clean and smog free. Laos is definitely the best place to chill out in SE Asia. Thailand doesn't come close anymore. |

If you want something romantic, I'd say go to Boracay or another remote Philippine Island. I saw a site that rents off a portion of the beach for you. It comes with a personal chef and you get a golf-cart to drive abouts too. I forget the prices but it was really reasonable! You can scuba and explore some of the caves there when you're not lounging abouts in the powder-like sand. (No, I haven't been there ... but if we didn't already agree on Hokkaido, I'd so go there this summer.) |
wow, Hokkaido sounds really great. That's the one place in Japan I've wanted to go most (I lived in Tokyo, but never got up there). A lot of people I've talked to consider it the best place to live in Japan (except that it snows a lot in the winter) - amazing fresh food, nature, more affordable than Tokyo or Osaka. It's on my hit list as well. |
The women in Sapporo are amazing. I would totally suggest get yourself a Midori first class JR rail pass. Start in Osaka. Make your way to Tokyo. Then book an over night train from Tokyo to Sapporo. Go by the Cassiopeia. |
Sounds good. It would also be nice to rent or buy a cheap scooter/motorbike there as well to tour around on at one's own pace. I'm planning to go when I have some free time and just take my time going around.
Think I can agree about the women too (never been there, but have met some from there in Tokyo, all of whom left a very good impression). |

Please elaborate on amazing. As in accommodating, polite, aggressive, drop-dead gorgeous, always in costume (like Harajuku)?? How is the men? All I've heard is they're taller than most guys in Japan.

Of course it all depends on what you enjoy doing, but I spent three weeks in Thailand this past summer and it was fantastic. $5,000 will go quite far there and your options will be virtually limitless. I spent majority of my time in the North, going through the jungle, visiting different cities. The last week was spent in the south though, and it was a perfect ending. We spent a few days in Krabi and then we took a boat to Phi Phi Islands. We stayed on a remote part of the island in a resort which was pure bliss. A really nice way to unwind after a busy/crazy trip! You can do as much or as little while you are there. The pool and beaches on the resort are the best I have seen, watersports available, great restaurants, relaxing spa amenities, etc. I went there with some friends, but majority of the guests were couples, which keeps it pretty quiet and peaceful, but there are always the two small bars on the resort which are available if you want a social evening out. The name of the resort is Phi Phi Island Village Resort. I believe we were paying US$50/ night. |

I would like to take a long, slow, leisurely trip through most of China. I wouldn�t want to be shoestrin� it either, so to me this would be deluxe, though not the deluxe most people thing about, more like midrange travel.

Yeah that's the other side of the coin. $5000 humping across Japan in middle class style or $5000 in first class style in some pleasuredome. |
