Hey guys.
My boyfriend is going to be starting university in Korea very soon. He's Korean and like most think a University degree is the best way to a good future. Not sure I totally agree with that.
Anyway, my friend recently told me that if he wanted to study/word in the U.S. using a "recognized" degree he shouldn't study in Korea. Why must a degree come from an accredited University? Are there any accredited Universities in Korea? Eventually we will move to Canada. i have seen doctors and Engineers that drive taxi cabs at home because their degrees are not recognized. Can you guys help me out with this? |

You don't have to be an arse you know. I'm just saying that I heard that a lot of Universities in Korea are not accredited. Maybe my information is wrong, but I've even heard that Yonsei and Korea Unis are not accredited. What makes a Uni accredited or not accredited because these are both pretty good unis from what I've heard... Maybe the information that I have obtained is wrong. Please correct me (nicely) if so.
Why wouldn't they be accredited? Instead of giving some lame-a s s snide comments try helping someone out for a change. |

Who knows why they wouldn't be accredited ??? There is probably a good reason for it though.
Check with the embassy for info on that. The only way to really know is ask the schools in the US if it would count. Then, you have to check with immigration, and make sure it would be ok for the visa. I wouldn't take anyone's word on here for that. Make sure of info that important. |

Again, it doesn't really have anything to do with a VIsa....my boyfriend is a Korean National. I just wonder about him getting a degree that is going to be useless in Canada. Ofcourse schools in Korea are not going to tell him that it is a useless degree in Canada. They want his business:)
I have heard that non-profit groups are the ones who verify whether a Uni is accredited or not. Not the actual schools themselves. You can find a list of US universities that are accredited on the web. I'm just curious if anyone has a list of Korean Unis that are also accredited. |

I only know of the British one, not for Canada or the US though. I think Seoul or Yonsei might be ok, but other ones would be iffy. And that is just an opinion, even those two might be useless. I meant a visa for the States or Canada And I meant the schools he wants to study at in Canada. I would not trust any info you get from Korea. Go direct to some of the places he wants to work or study at in the West. |

Just go on their homepages and see the list of their sister-schools in the states. If students can transfer their course over from Korea to the US, then you will find they are accredited. |

Ummmmmmm...let's see. Universities are accredited because that means they're credible.
Isn't there enough bs going on nowadays between the Koreans with fake credentials and their accusations of us not having them? |

If you are going to Canada. Your boyfriend can study at www.athabascau.ca
It is fully accredited by the Canadian government and in the US. He would have to pay higher tuition being non Canadian, but I think this is your best bet. I hope this helped. |

You're running into opposition because you asked for something that is accredited in the USA. Some people just can't handle that you asked for that. |

Just call about accreditation. One of the major universities in my state was accredited in some fields, such as medicine and engineering, but not in others, like communication and journalism. So, two people could graduate from that college and one could have a degree than was accredited and the other with a degree that wasnt. |

The comments below are only for studies in the field of business and accounting.
I don't know anything about what US accreditation means. However, I think you might be talking about 'general' accreditation. There are 2 main organisations.
AACSB International is the American based accreditation - it used to be for American universities, but it expanded and now does it on an international basis.
EQUIS is the European accreditation system - the controlling organisation is EFMD. Again, any university around the world can apply. The criteria for accreditation is different to AACSB.
One thing to note is that not all universities apply for accreditation. I heard that Harvard University does not apply for them because they don't want to be grouped with a large number of lower universities. Accreditation benefits students by letting them know that their university has met basic standards for research, teaching, etc.
Anyway, check their websites and see if the university is listed. |

The doctors and engineers driving taxis in Canada are in that situation because the immigration authorities accepted their degrees and experience to fill shortage areas, but Canadian employers/provincial authorities do not accept them for employment purposes.
You want to find out if potential employers will accept his degree/credentials, and if the provincial authorities will accept them if the job is regulated. |
