Have they found the suspects?
What took the fire department so long and why are they so inept?
How can they prevent this in the future?
I am in the states right now but if they can not find the suspects I want to go back to Korea tonight and find the bastards! |

I can't believe no one cares about this...
Last I heard the suspect was a 70 year old (Chinese?) guy who supposedly tried to light a palace on fire a while back. |

That is what the news said, some 68 year old was angry about not getting enough money for his expropriated property.
This is a tragedy. So few Korean landmarks have survived the wars and the bombings. I loved the gate and was always fascinated by it. I hope it is rebuilt detail ny detail. |

It is a tragedy. Korea has so few large relics left. Occupation and war has not been kind to their physical history.
Maybe the "special situation" of this dude should be ignored and instead an example made of an emotional old man who think the world starts and stops at his choice.
As The Metropolitician said, "Ajussis ruin everything."

Would have thought this would be a more pressing issue for the current events forum.
Was trying to think of a simular iconic landmark in a capital city elsewhere. I guess its like Big Ben or The Statue of Liberty burning down in the middle of the night.
I think, deep down, we all wish we had done it. It burned like a mf, which must have been quite satisfying.
I can't believe they hadn't fire-proofed it.
I also can't believe it was actually 600 years old. I know the gate has been there for that long, but I doubt it was the original structure. |

I also heard the thing about the guy being upset about gov't appropriated property, so that's probably right.
I believe the wooden part at least was destroyed during the Korean war and rebuilt in the early 60s. |
