OK, no idea what Ill get back here, but Im going to NYC in about a month, planning on staying for 2 weeks with my gf. We are unsure whether its best to go into a hostel or try for a sublet, and finding it difficult to plough through all the nonsense on Craig's List, so we were wondering if anyone could suggest anything?

Cheers!

I lived in Manhattan from 1998-2000.

Since I did live there, I never personally stayed in the hostels. But I knew of one that was on the Upper West Side that spilled out onto the sidewalk as part of the cafe culture. It struck me as an interesting to stay if you are considering hostels in NYC.

If you are trying to plough through the nonsense of Craigslist, I can try to help narrow down your search. Try searches like "Union Square" (it's one of my favorite areas of Manhattan - on 14th Street). Actually I like EVERYTHING below 14th Street. Absolutely love it. I lived below 14th Street as well, walked absolutely everywhere in that area at all times of day and night and never felt cautious or concerned much. (Up by Times Square or Madison Square and such where there are tons more tourists, it also felt like the like you had to have your guard up more.

If you decided you didn't want to be in Manhattan for whatever reason, another popular area that is basically right next to Manhattan on the Brooklyn side is WILLIAMSBURG. You might want to search for that area as well, and it might cost a little bit less for a sublease than Manhattan. Although honestly speaking, Manhattan is the coolest place to be by far in my opinion.
