Well nothing is free but I'm putting up 300 000 won of my money to save 10 dogs. If your interested in saving a dog from this Shelter which is being forced to closed PM me asap...it costs 30 000 won to adopt...and I'll pay it.

Check out the link you cant say No once you've seen the pictures. This has to be done before the 28th of February then they will all be sent to a kill-shelter!!!
You may have read the story on the front page of the lonelylifetime website about the shelter in Daejon which is being forced to close at the end of October.

Below are photos of many of the dogs who desperately need either an adopted home or foster home before they are sent to other shelters (which, unlike the Daejon shelter, are unlikey to be "no kill" shelters).

Anyone who is interested in meeting some of these dogs, we are organising weekly trips every Saturday. Our normal Saturday arrangement is to take the 9.00am KTX train from Seoul Station to Daejon (meeting at Seoul Station between 8.30 and 8.45am). It takes about an hour. We meet anyone going to Daejon from elsewhere (ie not from Seoul) at the Daejon train station at 10.00am and then we take taxis to the shelter (about 20 mins by car).

As far as adoption, transportation etc is concerned the usual process is:
- anyone considering adoption should definitely come down to the shelter to meet the dogs in person (adopting a dog is such a personal process, you always need to make your own connection with an animal);
- you can spend as much time as you like at the shelter getting to know any of the individual dogs that you wish to - taking them for walks, hanging out with them on the grass etc;
- the adoption fee is 30,000 KRW which goes to Mrs Jung the shelter manager (the lady who runs the place and pretty much pays for everything out of her own pocket);
- we will generally then take any dog in the process of adoption to the vet at the Daejon Emart (he is very kind and does a lot of work with the rescue dogs for very little cost) he will look at each dog to check their general health, give them a blood test to check for heartworm etc, that normally costs about 25,000 KRW;
- if the particular dog is not up to date with its vaccinations (which many are not, as Mrs Jung just does not have the money) then it is probably a good idea to get the immunisations done (which will cost another 25,000 KRW);
- as long as the dog is in a carry cage (you can either bring one with you or the Emart vet sells them) then the dog can come back on the KTX train no problem.

NO!!!!! I can't believe they are closing the place! What a great shelter it has been! Is there anything that we can do to save it from being closed? I am a cat person and have always verbally supported the work of this dear woman (or is it sisters?). What is being done with the cats. You only mentioned dogs.

Sorry...I didn't realize that all of this went down in October!! So sad!! I adopted a wee stray kitty myself in 2006. She's a lovely kitty with spunk and lots of leg rubs!

wow.......I really respect what you are doing for the shelter and the dogs. I had to give up my dog I raised since a pup to 10 years old in America and it crushed my heart. But, my dog went to a happy home.

I really feel your pain about loving dogs having no home. Unfortunately, I am leaving Korea in May and cannot adopt =/

This is an AWESOME idea. I'm in for 100,000. If anyone adopts/fosters (if you foster, you needn't pay the 30,000 adoption fee) I'll give you 25,000 toward food/supplies for your new or temporary pet. First (four people) to take me up on it get it. So if you adopt, you'll get a total of 55,000 between myself and seoulnhl!

If you guys are so open about giving away your own money, perhaps you should donate it so places can give free spade/neutering to these animals that seem to roam the street, reproduce and flood said shelters with dogs.

While you have noble intentions, in the big picture of things, without responsible KOREAN pet owners doing their part, there will always be shelters, dogs that need adopting, and dogs that are put down because there simply is more supply than demand.

There is already a fund to help with spaying/neutering, and I can name 3 vets off the top of my head who will significantly discount for those services, or offer them for free. Also, why couldn't they use the money we give them for that? And what do you think we will do with the extra money? And why do you think we haven't donated before?

Sir, this is a desperate situation in which 100+ dogs face doom when the shelter closes in a few weeks. What do you suggest we do to improve the lack of "responsible Korean pet owners"?

What do you expect us to do, say "Oh, wow, you are are SO right, I rescind my offer to help others who want to foster"?

How I wish I could help, but I'm moving to a new apartment and I don't know if they allow pets. They probably do, but since it's a brand new job as well, I'm hesitant to ask, and I won't be there until next weekend. But I will ask, and if I'm successful, I'll let you know. How long from Yangsan (near Ulsan) to Daejon by train or bus?
