that's not a problem, that's a blessing.

Not really. There are a few sites with Active X that I often visit. Also, my Korean g/f uses the computer as well and Korean websites seem to love their Active X!

that may be true, but active X is a security risk - my wife is not allowed to use my primary computer for exactly that reason.

From my point of view there's not much wrong with XP. It's a little bloated, but not that bad, nice and stable, and compatible with everything.

The main reason I've become so interested in linux is because the introduction of Vista showed that things are going the way of whale with Windows. If Vista is this resource-hungry I want to be long-cured of windows dependency by the time the next major release rolls around.

That combined with the fact that linux is quickly becoming more accessible and more compatible makes learning it a very attractive suggestion.

P.S.

There is a version of IE6 that you can track down for nix.

Can't remember the name off the top of my head.

Couldn't get my online banking to work but most other sites worked ok

Looks like ubuntu to me. Of course, the screen isn't really big enough to see anything...

I eventually installed Ubuntu and Kubuntu. Whilst it's OK, I'm not sure if was worth the considerable hassle it took to get up and running. One big problem is the lack of Active X. If this could be sorted then I would be halfway pleased. So far, I have to say it does feel and look nice, but the difficulty in doing simple things (such as enabling Korean input) is very frustrating.

Aye, my major beef with Linux. It looks and runs nice, but its such a pain in the butt to do something that should normally take 10 seconds.
