"The whole country was fooled by one black-haired foreigner"

Qoute in the International Herald Tribune, attributed to deputy special prosecutor, Moon Kang Bae. This was about Kem Kyung Jooh, Lee Myung Bak's former business partner, after the finding of the special investigation of BBK and Lee's relation to same.

A Korean-American has morphed into a black-haired foreigner... hmmm. I suppose technically correct, but irritating nonetheless, and hardly relevant to the investigation.

Silly Waegook. If the Gyopo does something bad, they're a foreigner, but if they do something even remotely good (win the Super Bowl, hit a golfball well, are born handsome) they're children of the Han! Hell, they don't even have to be 100% Korean. As long as they're famous, Korea will take credit for their success.

It seems we are obsessed to find anyone that has achieved greatness in just about any field and when that person happens to be only one-fourth Korean or even less, we are sure to write about that person

Haha. I remember watching the Indy/Chicago Superbowl and at every commercial break they switch over to these two well dressed anchors who had no knowledge of American football. I didn't understand most of the dialogue but I kept on hearing "Hines Ward". I thought, "WTF, he's not even playing the game this year, give it a break." Since the commercial breaks were so boring, as opposed to watching it in the states where you could watch for new commercials, I decided to count how many times they mention the name Hines Ward. The one time I counted, 11 freakin' times in a two minute span right after Indy had scored a touchdown.

I saw that article and thought the same. Foreigner is a dirty word in Korea.

ie..how utterly needless it was to call the guy a foreigner, and how korea's instinctively like to blame their problems as being inflicted on them from foreigners (even if they're actually korean)- rather than from within.

I'm surprised they didn't find some way to pin the namdaemun fire on foreign aggression. I bet if the perpetrator had so much as been on a package tour to america in his life before, they would have labelled him a foreigner.

As soon as the thing lit up, some foreigners here were already blaming other foreigners. No doubt, the blamers were sorely disappointed that it was a "home grown" nut-job who did it.

Chosun Ilbo has an opinion piece on this in which they repeat that quote toward the end.

If it wasn't for the fact that Koreans were the first humans to discover fire, the American military bases would already be overrun. So too would the mosque atop Hooker Hill, because of the lighter fluid from Saudi Arabia.
