Anyhow, thanks JFJ....nothing like seeing the Leafs suck for a few more years...as for Matts and his decision, I can understand. He doesn't believe in the rental....his loss though. Im sure drinking from the Cup in June is alot better than teeing off! |

For the record, NHL players get handsome bonuses for post-season play.
Mats Sundin took a stand based on his character and personal beliefs. He's staying loyal to a team and a city that he loves. Good on him, I say. He will go down as perhaps the Greatest Leaf Ever.

It kinda sucks he won't let himself be traded, but you can't really be mad at the guy. Classy player through and through.
Someone said he could see Mats heading to Chicago or L.A. next year... I wouldn't hold your breath. |

I agree. I think he is either done or signs another year with the Leafs. But that is it.
He is a classy player. Very classy. He is sticking with his heart and that is good but he is also hurting the future of the Laffs. As it goes. There are very few things in this world that can make everyone happy!

Its called 5 years! Look at Ottawa, Chicago, Montreal, Pittsburg, Anaheim...draft draft draft draft draft...can't rebuild by buying used parts! A team that grows together wins together man! Its a loss to sacrifice up drafts for rentals unless you think you have a good chance or resigning them.
Hell look at the islanders this year signing Comrie, Fedotenko, Guerin, Vasicek all having better years this year with there new team except Guerin but they are all FA next year and have done nothing for the Islanders...last year they were a better team and they only lost guys like Blake, Smyth(came later), Zednik(rental), Kozlov and Yashin
I respect Sundin decision to stay! I remember thinking how guys like Yzerman, Lemieux and Bourque...yeah he was trade for a cup run but they stayed and stayed when they could have left to bigger markets, and better teams......remember when Detroit sucked for years and the Pens?
Watch Edmonton and L.A will be huge sellers! Since Edmonton lost drafts over the Penner deal they will be looking to get stuff for Stoll, Horcoff, or Roloson....... |

On the one hand he would help the Leafs by willing to be traded. I'm not sure what he'd fetch . . . a few picks, I guess, or maybe a quality prospect. That'd help the team more than him sticking around for 15 throwaway games. He'd be doing what Ron Francis and Ray Bourque did. Is he a free agent at the end of the season? Then there's nothing preventing him from pulling a Recchi and signing with the Leafs again in the off-season.
But then again, he's earned his no-trade clause. That's why it's an incentive in a contract. If he waives it, and if he's under tons of pressure to do so---sounds like he and guys like Blake are---then it loses its allure. It'll turn into the NFL, where guys sign big contracts only to be cut at the end of 1 season. Not the same, but same principle there. |

Personally I think no trade clauses are horrible. No one deserves it. What you deserve is your paycheck and that is about it. Clubs pay millions of dollars and if they want to improve their club for the future by trading you, so be it.
Now before I get attacked on this thought, I just want to point out that there is only one person in the NBA that has a no trade clause, Kobe in LA. Point being is that other leagues do it and do just fine by not having it.
I think the NHL would be much more exciting this time of year if no trade clauses were in tact. Heck we would have dumped Reddens sorry ass last year if we could! And Ottawa would be set up for a few picks down the road.
No trade clause is garbage. You get paid enough, suck it up and take your transfer like a man and get to work and do what your paid to do.

So for you is this an issue about money or audience (or both)? At what point in salary or audience do you feel that one is obligated to go above and beyond a contracts requirements?

I hope my beloved Canucks do NOT pick up Richards!
Jokinen, maybe, but not at too high a price.
WIth Morisson returning, they are fine down the middle, and I would not give up on Bourdon yet.
If any prospect goes, it will be Schneider.
The cool thing about the time difference is that when we wake up tomorrow, the deadline will be over by 8am, so it should make for a great breakfast read |
