|
|
Hey....
I'm considering buying a used car. Basically I'm looking for something reliable, affordable to fix if a part goes, as fuel efficient as possible, and under 1,000,000 KRW.
What makes and models and years should I be looking for? Can anyone recommend some good websites, in Korean or English?
And as an aside, about how much a month does insurance--- liability only--- cost. Will a Korean insurance company access my Ameircan driving record and base the price on that? If so, does the burden fall on me to retrieve my American driving record? |

i would reccomend checking with people on/who have connections to the army bases here in Korea. a lot of people on the bases have cars, and a lot of people get reassigned to foreign countries at the drop of a hat, and are looking to get rid of their wheels quickly and most times for any amount of money. i just had a friend here in Daegu buy a car from a guy off Camp Walker who was moving due to re-assignment, and he paid 500,000 won for the car which is worth WAY more than that. he threw another 400,000 won into it once he got it just to fancy it up, tune it up, and its a great car. he started asking people at the base to keep their ears open, and about 3 weeks later he made the purchase, so im sure there are constantly opportunities coming and going if you try this route. give it a shot. |

kia and hyuandi, most makes anyway, have parts that are almost interchangeable, being the same company. repairs are cheap, way cheaper than the states. new clutch was 50k, labour and parts included.
gas prices suck, but the idea of being able to go where and when i want, without relying on bus service is awesome. I live in the sticks so it is good to have a car to see things you could not find on the bus.
insurance is cheap, i pay like 40k a month or something.
if you know any waygs who have cars they can steer you to a good solid mechanic.
do it your self parts are almost non-existant though. oil change is 30k and for that they check everything.
ps, these are just my experiences, others may have had differant ones.
oh, buying a car is easy, used cars are cheap, i bought my 97 credos for like 1.2 from a dealer. the free ad newspapers have even better deals if you can get a k-friend to transelate for you.
Insurance whys, they come to you and you pay them on the spot. I use LIG. |

Very happy with the car I bought here so far. Insurance about 50,000 a month, same as I pay in the US. |

Understand the liability laws in this country. You could be out a ton of
money if you are in an accident. Even if it is not your fault.
There is a case under discussion somewhere in this forum about a guy
who ended up paying 10Mw (after insurance) to the at fault party in an
accident where he was rear ended while stopped at a red light.
The logic used here is quite different from what you will find in your
home county.
Seriously unless you way out in boonies, public transportation is very
affordable and quite convenient.
Of course you could get 100Mw coverage, if that makes sense. |

Speaking as a car owner, my advice is not to get one. Main issues are parking, liability if you are in an accident, and miscelaneuos fees like car inspections and taxes. I pay $5oo in insurance per year and I drive it only about 20% of the time. If you live in the countyside then It might be worth it. |

I am way out in the boonies, believe me--- or I wouldn't even be considering it. If I get a car I'll only use for trips to Seoul and any time I intend to stay out past the time the buses run in Pyeongtaek. (I don't drink--- anymore--- so D-Dubs aren't an issue...) I would definitely NOT use my car for in-town errands, or getting to work. That's what buses and feet are for. |

Does anyone have connections? I would even be willing to pay a finders fee for a car in the 1,000USD range. I am out in the middle of no where and I cant move away from the dormitory unless i have transportation. |

Yup, feel the same way. Living in Seoul, I rarely use it (except for Costco runs). |
