their website offers up a korean site - am wondering if anyone here has bought one of these drives here in K and if so, whereabouts did you buy it?

lots of places sell them.

i've bought a couple of the porsche series a long time ago in NA. The designs are nice, but insides are the same as any other external drives.

here's a link to all the lacie drives:
danawa
auction.co.kr
gmarket

you could get more storage/price if you bought the harddrive and case separately.

sorted by popularity/bestselling.
case 3.5 ( desktop )
case 2.5 ( portable )

harddrive 3.5
Harddrive 2.5

edit:

just go to seon-in plaza in yongsan and you can find a bunch of shops that sell them.

LaCie 1TB Big Disk Extreme+ Hard Drive

That is one I want to look at, but I don't see it forsale in Korea...

As I use a notebook, I want an external drive with firewire and usb capibility so that I can maximize my slots.

I bought a maxtor external with firewire but the thing is WAY too noisy when I am sleeping.

I've read that the LaCie is very quiet.

If you have a recommendation for a QUIET external 1TB drive, I'd love to hear it.

yea, maxtors are known to be really loud. i have 4x250 GB maxtor drives in my tower, so you can imagine how loud it gets.

here is a list of decibel levels for HDs (select idle noise from the drop down menu).

Western Digital Caviar GP WD10EACS with NCQ (1000 GB SATA) - 35.9 decibels

Samsung SpinPoint T166 with NCQ (500 GB SATA) - 35.9 decibels ( link is for the 1 terabyte version which has the same noiseguard feature )

this is the only case that supports the SATA interface and has USB/FIREWIRE.

That is a pretty sweet case.

Why so many firewire/USB ports? Does it serve as a hub so you can connect multiple units together?

60k for the case seems about right considering what other companies charge extra for their firewire capability+HD.

I am a little worried in having a 1TB drive though...that is an awful lot of data to lose if the drive dies. I was looking into those 2x500gig jobs.

Guess I'll have to think on what I want to do.

Thanks for posting the links though. Thinking that is a really good HD case.

i agree. very nice looking case. it even has a fan cooler which should extend the life of the HD.

yea, it's a USB hub and FIREWIRE daisy chain. FYI, i would recommend only using the FIREWIRE as it doesn't use CPU resources for transferring files. USB doesn't have an interface for device to device transferring.

getting 2x500 is a better idea and cheaper. losing a terabyte of information would really suck. but you have the maxtor drive which could be used as an offline backup. I have an external 500 GB drive that i do that with. so i'm not so worried.

I have the Maxtor with firewire and its a good drive, just way too noisy. If I leave my torrents on over night the drive makes too much noise...so I want to get a quiet drive and just have the maxtor as an offline backup.

Think I will get one of those WD 500gigs and the external case next time I am near yongsan.

I really appreciate the help.

ok you showed us yours Laughing so i'll show you mine (or the one I want to get)

- tried to order it last year and they were backordered several months

http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10722

one can see why -

haven't heard about noise problems from any external drive - that's news to me - I use a cheapy made in china "new world net" on my windows machine - 120 g - it's quiet as a mouse - just a little light let's me know she's working Wink

I have a 2.5inch WD drive. The thing doesn't make a sound...160gig one. It is USB and I only use it as a document/photo backup drive.

The 3.5 inch drives are different. I bought a
http://www.maxtorsolutions.com/en/catalog/OT4_Plus/ 500gig a couple weeks ago.

It is VERY noisy. When I have anything more than 500KB/s accessing the drive it goes nuts.

It is nice because if you are a windows user it has good software, if you are a mac user it will auto detect and auto format for mac.

Since I currently use a macbook, it was another consideration in buying it.

The new LaCie drives are beautiful and well recommended. Just anything more than the 500gig brick is not sold in Korea it seems.

Also, another reason I went with using an external firewire HD is my CPU would use too much when doing fast downloads onto the internal HD, or a USB drive. Though my internal drive is a seagate 2.5, quiet as a mouse.

Spliff do you leave it going with torrents or other upload/downloads on a continuous basis?
