I was in the grocery store, or what purports to be a grocery store in Hayang. It was late, after 10:30 PM and the lines were long. A mother and her son, perhaps 9 or 10 years of age, were standing in line when the boy turns outward and drops his pants and underwear to his knees so that he can scratch himself on and around the groin. I was dumbfounded. I have experienced incredible amounts of rudeness and ill-mannered behavior here, but nothing like that. After about 10 seconds, I told him to pull his pants up. His mother looked at me as if I was crazy, and no one else said anything, or even noticed. The kid looked at me stupidly and kept scratching, his miniature weenie exposed to the world.

This might be unique.

It's kind of not funny. Where people put their hands here is one of the reasons I always cook my own food and never eat out. That simple story speaks volumes about sanitation here. It frightens me, and I am not bacteriaphobic.

10 years old is grade 5. The thought of one of my old grade 5 students doing that is hilarious.

The kid was probably copying his father, with HIS miniature weenie exposed to the world.

it sounds like we have another unhappy white person in korea. if you're going to lock yourself in your apart-uh and never go out again, why not go teach back home?

The funny thing is if YOU did the same thing as the boy, everybody around you would look at you like WTF.

It has already been established in this thread http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=112457&highlight=
that you are very much a bacteriaphobe.

However, that story is very weird, but still does not surprise me in the least.
