My wife is doing a thesis for her Masters degree in Korea.

How do you get the first few page numbers of a document, in roman numerals, and the rest of the document numbered in regular digits e.g. 1,2,3, etc.

Thank you.

I personally do things in blocks. The frontmatter (Roman numerals) in one and main body ("Arabic numerals"--0,1,2,3...) in another.

I do the same. I have different documents for different numbering system. Perhaps inefficient, but in my experience, such is life with WORD.

Isn't there like template for a thesis out there some where?

I just opened a document called Thesi.dot that came with my Office 2000 suite.

There must be some better stuff out there.

Are you using Microsoft Word?

You need to start a new section for the footer. Depending on what version of Word you're using, it's something like Page Layout -> Page Breaks -> Section Breaks -> Next page. Put a section break at the end of the last page you want to be Roman numerals. Then go to the footer on the next page (the one you want to start the regular numbers), and double click it to activate it. Find the button at the top that says, "Link to previous section" and make sure it is deactivated. You can then put in the different type of numbering that you want.

Sorry if that isn't entirely clear. Maybe if this is put in the techno forum people there would be able to explain better.
