Hi everyone,
I have just been assigned a new class and can choose the course material. The students are 18 and can speak English very well. The acadamy teacher classes in life science, and ancient civilizations and now I have the opportunity to teach a "world issues" class.
My question is, I have my own ideas, I just want to know what you guys think are important world issues to enlighten my bright students with.
Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks |

um, not to be too serious but some world issues I know of that could be discussed are overpoluation, inequal distribution of wealth, stereotypes, and of course you could keep an eye on the sports pages for the next big international competition to talk about.
Just a thought. |

The AIDS epidemic is spreading and seriously threatening the economic and social stability of the hardest-hit countries. It's spreading rapidly in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, as well as continuing to take a huge toll in Sub-Saharan Africa. China has a big problem (of their own making) they're not dealing with very effectively. Since there still isn't a cure, it's a virus of mass destruction.
We're running out of fresh water too.

Osangrl,
The same thing happened to me. I've been teaching a world issues class for about two months now. One thing I can suggest is to look around online for other schools in other countries looking for partnerships.
I hooked up with a school in Africa and the students exchange email and regular mail with eachother on a regular basis. I've been using these students to help my kids learn about poverty, hunger, AIDS and environmental issues. They actually have more of an interest in these topics because they actually know students in one of these countries. Let me know if you want any further info.

Getting penpals from one or two countries would be a great way to talk about issues and how they relate from one country to another. |

I highly doubt the students who have access to the internet really comprehend poverty and hunger....then again....
Osangrl,
Care to tell us what you had planned, prior to asking for other ideas?
World issues....'Newspapers.' Find one topic that's interesting and make a week's course of it.
You know, though Kimcheeking was joking, those topics could actually be discussed...and probably with more success and feedback than anything else. Why?
Well, remember your classmates at their age, and how dense they (ok, me) were? Well, mutliply that by 5.439754 (on world issues...no, anything that is not their school), and you've Korean kids.
I think the class should be Korean issues, then at a later date...world.
Shoosh,
Ryst |

Of course. How could the youth living in Africa that can get online possibly have a clue as to what is going on thier homeland concerning poverty and AIDs. Infact we must have an even better understanding of it being from the west. And it goes without saying that not a single person in Africa has the education nor the ambition to improve their nation and continent.
Your glib little comment reeks of arrogance.
And yeah,
as per the topic....
I guess the hot ones now that people are into include: AIDs, WTO, war in Iraq, the Korea hub of Asia plan, UN is always interesting, environment, I also like the talks about sex, drugs, crime and punishment and such - but I have learned that it depends on how conservative your school/students are (that goes without saying I guess for some toopics). |

Arrogance, no.
Ignorance, yes.
Thank you.

Oh, and I am from a nation and area that sure as heck didn't and doesn't have the internet. And sure enough, they are poor. Sure enough, they use drugs. Sure enough they ho-r themselves out for next to nothing. Sorry, if I equated the two.
Editing them bloody cue words...
