I have a bit of a dilemma with my phone. My friend registered this phone for me some three months ago, however I have yet been unable to transfer it into my name. Apparently LG want an ID which is valid for at least a year, and won't accept my student ID because it expires every semester (even though they seem unaware it will renewed every semester) - And to make things worse my friend is leaving to America in about a month, so exactly what the heck am I supposed to do? Is this correct? Is there some law stating they cannot give me a phone just because my ID isn't valid for a whole year?

did your friend cancel the phone? if not, there's little you can do other than buy another phone.

as far as registering a phone in your name, if you have a korean checking account or can bring in a 3 month contract's worth of cash then they should let you set it up under your name.

your other option is to find a korean friend, pay them cash, and have them register it under their name.

unfortunately, though, to go back to my first point, in an effort to prevent phone theft, they have made it extremely difficult to use a phone that has not been cancelled. and i don't just mean the phone is no longer under contract (they refer to this as the account being suspended indefinitely). i mean the owner of the phone needs to call the telecom's HQ and specifically ask that the phone be removed from their account.

i know, it's ridiculous. i've been fighting with them, too.

Theres no other way? They won't accept my ID because it expires in a month. But will they accept one that is good for 3 or 6 months? I fail to see why not, considering it will be renewed indefinitely for a period of at least two years. Or, if I pay for a full year of education (or a transcript that states I will be attending for the FULL course) thus getting a longer period ID that would do, right? -_-

i think if u have a letter from ur school verifying that you are enrolled for the next 3 months or longer, u should be able to get a contract, keeping in mind everything i said in my last post. really, though, when i have complicated questions like this, i call 02-1330. even though im pretty good at korean (as u are too, i think, since ur a student), they can make more progress than i can when talking to the stupid people at the telecoms. just go into the store, call 02-1330, tell them the situation, and hand the phone to the idiots at the counter.

OK, so I called around and here's the deal: go to T-World in Hapjeong (a few hundred meters straight ahead out of exit 2) or T-World near Jonggak Station, bring your passport and your phone, and they should be able to set you up with a pre-pay account. I don't guarantee anything, though.

also FYI: under the pre-paid account conditions, a text message costs 20 won and every 10 seconds of a phone call costs 62 won.

I'll keep pushing. Maybe they'll register me with the extended VISA. Well if not, can't I just get my current phone switched to a prepay? I don't really want to change numbers/phones now. And how does Prepay work, where and how do I top up the phone, and how can I check the money left on the phone?
