For Fresh Prince, if you are starting from zero in reagrds to cardio/weight training, I'd advise doing cardio first-you're on a roll and you can add to it, instead of being discouraged with the weights.

Give cardio about 2-3 weeks, work the weights in. When you're doing both, I would advise weights first, then cardio-personally, I don't want to do weights once I'm covered in my own perspiration.

Genetics is central, but obviously diet and lifestyle have a massive role. Japan has an obesity rate that is 10% of that of the US. To put that solely down to genetics would be comical.

Exercise is important more for general health (and living longer) than for losing weight. Everyone should exercise whether they're dieting or not. The reason exercise is less important for losing weight is twofold: (1) there's no point burning 600 calories in the gym and then eating a pizza. You might lose more weight by cutting out the slice of bread with dinner than you might by taking the stairs. (2) It's very, very difficult to consume one's normal (and let alone even fewer) amount of calories whilst at the same time introducing burning 600 cals into your system at the gym every day. That's gonna make you even hungrier. Generally, people eat more if they exercise intensively and lose no weight as a result, maybe even gain.

I recommend using the treadmil and cycling cardio. You can burn 600 cals in half an hour to 45 mins.

I've always been active (in my 50s) but the weight crept up over the past few years... Lost all that and then some only when I started to mix up my expercise routine with running/weight training, and of course, cutting down on heavy meals especially in the eves. Not eating heavy meals after 6pm helps tremendously... so make lunch your biggest meal of the day.. Of course cut down on the fat and alcohol intake...

-Never think Snack food, or snacks aren't meals. If you ate a box of cookies , that is your food for the DAY.

It's technically best to make breakfast your biggest meal, and if you're trying to loose weight eat 5-6 small meals a day.

Interesting tidbit as far as the genetics are concerned:
I did a research paper on it in college. Turns out it's fairly hard to separate out the different factors, but we're able to get a decent idea using identical twin studies. Estimates range all over the board, but based on the stuff I studied it looks like genetics contributes close to 40%. Significant, but by no means overcomeable.

I eat bananas for breakfast so, even though they are expensive, almonds [not chocolate covered] are the way to go for a snack.

When I was younger I was skinny as a rail and could eat anything I wanted, over the last few years though, my metabolism has really caught up and it's getting harder to keep the weight off. I remember older people telling me that this would happen many years ago: They were right.

Anyone have any success stories in losing weight without crash dieting? I'm hoping people with actual experience in the matter can share some ideas.

For me, coming to South Korea has led to me losing weight. Honestly, I can barely keep weight on here. Rice and raw fish, raw fish and rice, add some kimchi, etc. I dread dinners with my co-workers (which, unfortunately, happen far too often) because I know I will be starving afterwards - I prefer to cook for myself.

It has gotten to the point where I have gone to Lotte Mart desperately in search of fattening foods because I don't feel I am getting enough carbs or protein. However, my situation may be a bit different than yours - my metabolism is still sky high - Awesome for when I'm in the States, but f&%$#@ sucks here.

So, my advice - dine with your co-teachers. You'll be a stick in no time.

I've lost weight a few times in my life, but my successes and failures have always been tied into my circumstances.

Lots of free time while working in Korea, plus exercise and self-control = lose weight

Too much free time at home, vacation in Canada = gain weight

I'm still trying to figure out how to get to an ideal weight and then maintain it properly.

The trick to weight is having a goal. You need to really want it then find things to remind you. For me, I want to go into the marines after Korea. So I have a goal of losing almost 30kg, being able to run 3 miles, and able to do 20 pull ups by December.

Ha! Me too

That 20 pulls ups is a ****....I'm up to about 6....figure after losing 15 pounds and a bulking phase, I'll be much higher.

I lost 5 kg's in 2 months by changing from beer to whisky and water. Whisky because it's expensive enough to provide an incentive not too drink too much or often (you don't want to replace being overweight with liver damage) .

But the same reason you should cut down on alcohol , you should also cut down on carbs . When you drink booze your body first burns the alcohol because it's an amazing fuel and stores whatever carbs you may have eaten as fat . So it won't help just to cut down on booze , you need to also cut down on breads , pasta , rice , sugar etc . Beer is the worst of both world having both alcohol and carbs .

Simply doing this....cutting down on beer and carbs and replacing with protiens will make you lose weight quickly but only to an extent .After that you need to add a little exercise into your lifestyle (they reckon about 14 minutes of walking a day is enough) ...which I'm starting to do now.....and you'll be smiling .
