i just wired my monthly money home and was shocked that it cost 985 won to get 1 USD. i am wondering if the rate is any better at standared chartered if for some reason there rate would be different or is it similiar?

Find the best rate, even if you exchange on the street at a money changer, and then transfer those US dollars at your bank. You don't have to exchange at the same place you transfer.

What's the rate on the street?

At SC, it was 982 yesterday.

I'll do you at 1200won for a dollar.

Can't say fairer than that. Dollar is worthless.

It makes sense to go with the best rate....

....However, this is ususally the bank you transfer with. They will give you a remittance rate as opposed to a cash rate. The remittance rate is always lower.

All of the banks have thier rates posted in real time on thier websites. The rates fluctuate, but the spread will say the same.

Is the whole stamping of the passports dealio - only for "exchanging" money? Is it possible to walk in with 2000 U.S. dollars and not get hassled for transfering?
