I vote for Thailand. I'm interested in the city scapes. A day at the beach will do me fine but I'm into cities. Seeing the good, the bad and the ugly of them. I had an opportunity to go to Bangkok to work on a documentary. I was so psyched about it. The pay was crap but all of my travel expenses were going to be paid - plus a friend was putting it together. The financing fell through and my heart was a bit broken. I plan to go there once I have the time and money. I usually get distracted with Hong Kong or Japan (two of my favorite places on the planet).
I want to go to the PI but I have reservations. I'm whiter than a piece of loose leaf paper. With jet black hair I look even whiter. I don't handle situations where people hit me up for money well. From what I've been told by a mate of mine (who met his wife in PI), some undesirables would assume I ws made of bocoup bucks.
Not my cup of tea to get hit up like that - and then the abu sayaf types in the south... I would have to figure out a way to go with my mate and his wife.
I have tremendous interest in Vietnam.
Thai would be first on the list.
Cheers,
Joe |

Is Myong Dong less Korean than, say, the Ichon folk village? |
i think yu are splitting hairs. when most people say "authenitic culture", they really mean "old culture" or perhpas more accurately - "unique culture". and the folk village is certainly more uniquely korean than myeong-dong.
modern korean culture is just like anywhere. the world is becoming one big amerikan supermarket. but the uniquely korean things, especially gugak, are what will keep me here a while yet.
o - and i plan to go to thailand, and then india, around march/april. that is of course after i check out WOMADELAIDE (http://www.womadelaide.com.au/).
but i'll be back. |

Probably because it's generally not considered "southeast asia". |

I wanted to go to the Philippines this time but couldn't get a ticket close enough to the weekend. Oh well, I'm not disappointed to be headed to Bangkok and hopefully on to Ankor Wat. |

Irony is if I was there sweating my butt off I'd wish I was here. |
Still stands 3 months or so later. |
