Question Manila gets the nod before Sydney

I would have thought sydney would get in before jakarta also.

I just thought of that as well.. Jakarta is one of the biggest pits I've ever been to. I can't imagine it being 'good' to live in..

I'm curious about these polls.. as sometimes they are for 'business expats' which means how many other expat businesses are around to ship stuff and western restaurants and more finer expat things. Cities like Jakarta and Manila cater to that kind of stuff.. whereas a city like Sydney or Seoul is a little less 'expat oriented' for International Businessmen to the same extent. At least thats my take on it.

Also, I noticed Saigon and Hanoi were FAR FAR down on the lists.. and there just isn't the high class wine-and-dine do business over this and that kind of atmosphere.. but both cities would definetely beat out Manila and Jakarta for more 'average people' expat people like us.

There is a more recent study (data gathered in November, 2002 and will be updated by Mercer every year):

And yes, Taipei and all Japanese cities still rank higher than Seoul.

That poll is even more messed up. Detroit ranks well above Hong Kong, Prague and about 150 other cities. NO WAY! Detroit is one of the ugliest most decripit cities in the world. I grew up near there and the place is a crack-infested bars-on-every-window get-the-hell-out-fast-before-the-sun-sets kind of place. I've never been a more scarier more messed up city in my life. (Hopefully they are talking about Detroit suburbs like Grosse Point or something - but even those wouldn't anywhere near that high compared to the other 150 cities below it)..

what I find interesting is how far up the australasian cities usually rank in these type of things. I suppose once you've been on a plane for so long any place where they serve coffee looks attractive Laughing
