I know alot of people are curious about what's it like to teach in one of those 'closed/ off-limit' countries like North Korea and such. But I have never heard anyone ever mention about the possibility of teaching English in Cuba.
I know the money might be crappy, but think about the possibility of being able to go to the beach on the weekends and stuff. I've heard that they have a really cool party scene there.
I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have any experience travelling to what Hemmingway once called "The pearl of the Caribbean"? |

There are a bunch of Canuks doing it, but it is LEGAL for them to be there.
Lots of them head to the beaches of Varadero Cuba - nice beach town as well. |

| If you do go to Cuba, and I am correct that you're American, don't go through Canada. Apparently the US has people watching who gets on the planes bound for Cuba, so they can arrest the Americans doing that. I bet there are direct flights from Korea though. |

| Is it actually ILLEGAL to go to cuba? I thought you actually had to have GONE there to get in trouble...so arresting you in canada on the way there would be impossible. |

The Americans have no jurisdiction to arrest anyone when they are in Canada or on their way to Cuba.
They will tag you on your return to the states if they can but they have to prove you were in Cuba. |

| I had an old professor that took trips to Cuba with students every couple years. They just went through Mexico and asked the Cubans to please not stamp their passports. |

Go to Cuba from the Bahamas. It's really close. Flights from Miami to Nassau are less than 100 USD. Tell the Cubans NOT to stamp your passport.
I worked for Royal Caribbean for a while. We went to Cuba during a hurricane, as it was the only place we could go to to get out of the hurricane's way to be close to land. Cuba is nice. A lot of Canadians I met who have been there didn't have anything nice to say about it though, and they said "oh being an American, you would want to go there... blah blah blah," whatever. Cuba is nice. |

Americans can go to Cuba legally if they have a license from the State Dept. There are two types, general and specific. For a general license, you just have to go for a valid purpose, e.g. business or academic conference and abide by a bunch of rules, like how much per day you can spend and on what. It is not a concrete piece of paper. A specific license is needed to do stuff like visit family, if I recall correctly. For that you must apply to the State Dept. and get explicit permission. There are daily flights from Miami, and weekly from NY and LA.
The penalty for travelling to Cuba illegally is not arrest but a fine. You can pay it, or appeal it. My understanding is that the gov't has not dared to pursue any appeals because they are afraid that the law will be declared unconstitutional as it denies a basic right to travel freely.
You can go and work in that Communofascist police state for $10/mo. Life there is quite expensive, as well. You will regret it. While I am no great fan of Amerika's system, I'm afraid Cuba's is NOT the answer. |
