I found a stash of cans of baked beans in E-mart. I started dancing with glee and eventually slipped over in the pool left from my excited dribblings....

When i brought them home howver I realised that they had a used by date of April 2001.

WTF?!?!?!

Do baked beans go off? Are they safe to eat? Haven't opened a can yet because I'm scared of loud noises and possible explosions....

Found exactly the same thing at a supermarket here too - I did wonder if it was in fact the "canned" date (sometimes they put a 'produced' date rather than an expiry date on Korean products), but opened the can and saw some rather strange looking white goo amongst the sauce, and a lot of the beans had cracked open.

Got rid of them sharpish, as I suggest you do too.

Is the can dented at all? If you open the can and it sounds like there was pressure in the can, throw them out. Also, if they look funky, eat them. Most canned things last for ever. The marines eat rations left over from the korean war and it hasnt harmed there IQ yet, so you should be fine.

How in the world can something sit in a supermarket 2 years past its experation date. Talk about good stock rotation.
Also shows how popular Baked beans are here. Smile

before or after you eat the beans?

I should have seen that reply coming......

Regards to the whole stock rotation thing.... I don't thinnk it applies to "western" foods.....

I've seen peanut butter/paste thats 2 years out of date in E-mart. Maybe understandable in a small hick corner store but not in a big chain like E-mart.....

If i ate the beans and got very sick, would i have grounds for suing for lots and lots of money???

Could be an easier way (and far less stressful ) way of making money then teaching....

I thought every medium-sized supermarket had a 'foreign food' shelf tucked away in some corner -- they all do here in backwater Sokcho. Peanut butter, olive oil, canned olives, tomato sauce, etc & baked beans. If the can is undented, I wouldnt worry about the contents.

Stores are allowed to sell foods past the marked expiration date, so long as the food is "wholesome."

Quote:
Low-acid canned goods: 2 to 5 years (canned meat and poultry, stews, soups except tomato, pasta products, potatoes, corn, carrots, spinach, beans, beets, peas and pumpkin)
High-acid canned goods: 12 to 18 months (tomato products, fruits, sauerkraut and foods in vinegar-based sauces or dressings)

Just an idea, but you might want to start checking the expiration date on the products that you buy!

Enjoy your weekend.

Are these the baked beans in molasses or in the tomato paste?

And why is there an expiration date on sour cream? Is that the day it goes good?
