Yo! i recently tried this with the "monkey mind" kids, and it's working like a charm!

Some of them have taken to it almost like fish to water.

If anyone is overly disruptive during the 60 ( or so ) seconds ... we simply "START AGAIN" Laughing

yes...not sure what your method/style is.... I have done some quick practices in the classroom in the past...just have everyone take a minute to sit up straight, feet on floor, take a few exhales, ....it seems to clear the brains...

I tried to have the kids just put their heads down and stay silent for a few minutes to calm them down. Then their homeroom teachers came back and told me not to do that anymore.

that was at my old school where the 1 subject teachers had no backbone and wouldn't complain to the homeroom teachers about anything.

here at my new school, the head of the one subject teachers is a beast. She'll chew out the homeroom teachers for doing the slightest thing to inconvenience us 1 subject teachers.

Hah.. I used to do that... except I called it the 'quiet game' and the goal of it was to get the class so quiet that I could hear the clock ticking ( at the back of the class) for 10 seconds. First time it took them about 5 or 6 minutes to settle down enough. After they realized that they couldn't even breathe loudly (and got tired of tourette's syndrome-like outbursts) it would only take a minute or so.

It really was quite effective at settling the class down. Afterwards, I would only speak in a soft voice to further enhance the calming effect.

Try it!

With the younger kids I turn the lights on and off with a loud "hey!" Keep the lights out to show them you mean business.

Once I get their attention, sometimes by tapping the board, or yelling "Yogio! ChoyongEEhe," they usually look at me.

I put my hand up, all fingers out and tell them I am going to count down to one, and by the time I get to one, I want complete silence in the room. "FIVE," thumb in down, "FOUR," two fingers down, "THREE," three fingers down, "TWO," four fingers down. By the time all that is left up is my index finger, I place it to my mouth and don't even say ONE.

Usually this works. Be stern. You might have to do it again, show them that you mean business. By the third time, the more mature kids in the class will tell the other kids to chill out. If the other kids still don't get it, intimidate them by slamming your hand down on their desk with a loud "YAH!" The other kids will hound him for that and he should get the point by then. If all else fails, give him 50 pages of homework.

I make them stand and chant stuff.

Such as:

Larry and Laura Really love red roses.

Good, better, best, never let me rest, until my good is better and my better is my best.

Respect! When someone speaks I will listen!

Ten to twenty repetitons usually works.

Then they sit.

Then a little sermon on behavior in class.

After that it's individual.
Students who are yapping away get to hold their fingers to their lips.
Students who fidget get to put their hands on their heads.

In particularly disruptive classes I draw a circle on the board where the
student will place his nose for the remainded of the class. I usually only
have to do the nose thing once year, the circle on hte board tends to
bring back bad memories.

I have made kids cry, one kid used the "F" word and I made him stand
for about ten minutes, he started crying or I would have made him stand
the whole clase.

The key is to know the difference between enthusiasm and disruption.

But, I may try this meditation method next time.

Some of my students have had kneeling minutes when the classroom was starting to get chaotic.

Hmmmmm ... wow, some really interesting feed-back here.

Frankly i chalk it up to PEDAGOGY & classroom "control" techniques.

As i tell them: "Well being up, stress down".

That's similar to mine. i tell them "myung-sang" ( meditation ).

Most know i'm kinda "hip" to Buddhism, so one or two Ki-dok Yos ( i.e. Church-ee kids ) at first said NO myung sang
( thinking all meditation = Buddha worship ).

Laughing

I made it clear it had nothing to with Buddha, or Jesus, or Hana-nim, Allah, Mohamed or nothing. It's just YOU!
This is simply quiet "classroom" meditation.

Why myung-sang? Because it's fun? Because it's cool? No!

Because you're making too much frickin' noise. MONKEY MIND Idea

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_mind

Can you be quiet? No? Fine ... MYUNG-SANG!

Well-being UP, stress DOWN.

"Ok, ha-ja ... 1 minute! Eel poon. Yuk-ship cho."

Some giggle & squirm, goof-around etc., i let it go as long as it doesn't get too out of hand. If, after making stern eye contact, i feel it continues to be overly disruptive, we ... START AGAIN ( 60 seconds ).

As stated, the results have truly been AMAZING!

Indeed, i've noticed a dramatic shift in the classroom energy, everyone usually much calmer, responsive & more focused.

Oh yes, i also insist ALL my kids MUST raise their hands & wait for me to give them permission to speak.

They know the routine, & are rewarded with points on the board if they're good.

Ok, who's score-keeper? Hands up! Wink

LOL... yeah, I've been known to have an entire class 'meditate' by kneeling in the hallway with their arms above their heads. It's especially effective when the school disciplinarian just happens to walk by and discover them. Cool
