What I hear from other Koreans is that we are such excellent drivers. But in other parts of the world, Asians are usually considered bad drivers. Who is right? |

When Koreans learn what seatbelts and red lights are for, we can discuss this seriously. |

The best!
Red Lights - screw em!
Pedestrians - screw em!
Other cars - screw em!
Being courteous - screw it!
Hanson once wrote something about Korean drivers here. It was a perfect description of just how insane it is. |

You have to put things into perspective. Generally they're terrible compared to British drivers, but at least they're less likely - on the whole - to develop road rage and start fighting after a slight issue. With the exception of Japan, look at the countries around Korea that Koreans typically go to.
China? No better than Korea on the whole and it can certainly be much more dangerous avoiding traffic in parts of China.
The Philippines/Thailand? Can be pretty rough out there too. |

I voted yes, because I think Koreans have better driving skills than we do.
They may not follow road rules, but most korean drivers I know are far better at:
- Squeezing through tiny gaps at speed
- Aggressive driving eg. pushing into a gap/not letting others into a gap
- Driving through small winding alleys
- Parking in awkward places
- Not getting irritated by trafic conditions, or by being in close proximity to other cars. Most of us get frazzled way too easily, whereas Koreans just take it in their stride and drive on.
We can't impose our standards of safe driving on them anyway, as they simply don't know any better. They haven't had it drummed into them to wear seatbelts from birth, and running red lights is normal. |

Well, what I meant was Koreans' driving skills, not following the traffic rules. We all know Koreans take the red light as a sign for 'step on the gas.' I think if we have the police patrol the road every now and then people will follow the rules a little bit more. |

Right on Newbie.
Haven't you ever noticed yourself saying "Look at that maniac!" after just having blew a red light yourself?
Come on now people! We all know it is okay to do these things just as long as no one is cutting in front of us and WE are the ones doing the cutting off and stuff...
Yes, I can be the biggest a-hole driver and it's normal in this country. I love it. Back home, I would be arrested every day for driving to endanger.
However, here in Korea, if I am really being especially aggressive (which is more than half the time) I simply leave my flashers on.
The flashers (supposedly) tell other drivers "Please excuse my bad driving manners"

Koreans have excellent pavement driving skills.
They are also excellent at driving and watching incar TV at the same time. |

I've generally found Korean motorists to be surprisingly considerate towards cyclists |

I honestly hope you're joking. I know, sadly, that you aren't but I still hold out hope that you are. Why?
1) Yeah they're really good at this except for all the times when they cause accidents precisely by doing this. Saw 3 of these kinds of accidents yesterday.
2) Yep, they're real good at being hyper-aggressive on the road which causes about a hundred near misses to every actual accident. And oh yeah, they have a really high rate of accidents. So can you try to figure out how this is a good thing again?
3) Koreans are very good at driving through small winding alleys, it's true. However, how good do you have to be to be driving too fast and ignoring the world around you? Here, you take this "drive fast and navigate a small space" as a good thing and I look at the results of this behaviour: more accidents and especially more deaths of pedestrians. You do know that Korea has one of the highest pedestrian death rates of all OECD countries, right?
4) This is just so stupid a comment as to be almost unworthy of a response. So yeah, they can park in awkward places. But so can anyone when they blatantly ignore the fact that parking with the ass-end of the car blocking one lane of traffic isn't exactly "parking in an awkward space." On top of that, I find a whole helluva lot of Koreans really need to go back to school and learn how to park in the first place. Why? Cause yeah those white lines do mean something, brain trust....
5) This one made me laugh the most, I think. They're more relaxed? I don't know what kind of crack you smoke when you're in a car here in Korea but they most DEFINITELY suffer from road rage. Haven't you wondered what all those taxi drivers, bus drivers and ajosshis are yelling at each other about?
So yeah, buddy, quit smoking that pipe. Open your eyes and realize that Koreans are positively and absolutely not good drivers. It's been said before and it'll be said again: Koreans drive like brain-damaged, crack-addicted, ADD affected, blind monkeys and for the few that are actually decent drivers there are about 10,000 who seem to leave their brains in their asses every time they get behind the wheel. |
