I generally budget myself 100,000 won a week for entertainment and food. Plus a bit extra for the unexpected things that come up. I automatically send home about 1.2 mill as soon as I'm paid, depending on the exchange rate. I pay my kung fu bill and buy some clothes and pay my utility/phone bills. I'm usually left with about 100,000 by the time the next pay day comes around.
I could probably do alot better but I am saving and living well as it is.

When my wife was working I am pretty sure we were over 4mil a month. We should have been saving 3mil a month instead of 2mil, but we wanted to travel a bit before having a baby.
I can honestly say not having that extra income hurts, but having my wife home is really great for the baby, and good for me, as she isn't complaining about how drunk foreign teacher xxx couldn't come into work that day. (Though i found those stories sometimes amusing...the irresponsibility factor has increased since I did the hawgwon circuit) |

Good math skills Weatherman!
Thats about right, between 3.5 to 4 per month.
But my wife works, she makes about 1 per month now will change jobs next spring and then her salary will go up considerably (to about 3 per month it seems).
As we make about 4 a month, live on one and send 2.5 or more evermonth it works out fine. We also take money every month and put it in our travel account. This 200 000 to 300 000 per month means we can take a nice one month tripe every year. |

Wish my wife could get a job making 3mil a month!!! That's more than I make without overtime.
You are right on the money about travelling money Homer. I do something like that too, and so we travel usually 1-2 times a year. This year is an exception as we had a baby, however next year I plan to travel a few times to make up for this year's lack of travelling. |

Privates...the busier you are, the less free time you have to spend money. Also, a health club membership used properly will eat up a lot of time.
Here is my idea. Sink 500,000 or so into a home entertainment system. Computer, playstation, the works. It will keep you at home more, as your apartment is actually fun. Whne you leave Korea, you can sell it all with a small hassle, and only lose a little bit of that money.
Hansot to eat is a great idea. 2,000 won for a meal, on average. Also, I found a bakery that sells sandwiches for 2-3,000 won. My school has a water filter, so I can drink that all day.
I should not be posting here. I am a horrible spender, but it is my lifestyle and I like it. |

My current beau is a financial advisor and his advice to me was make a budget- decide how much you spend for food, utilites, books, movies, beer, cigs, clothes, and bills. Find ways of cutting corners (used books, clothing exchanges, phone cards, eating at home or out of a dumpster) Don't forget to include some pleasures in your life.
But be realistic. I know one person who is getting super stressed about living on 300,000 a month. I mean really that is too strict. Sometimes emergencies do come up and there are some things you want to do.
I want to travel around SE Asia next year so I'll extend my contrat for an extra few months for travel money. No biggy. Christmas is coming up so I am buying gifts for the folks back home. I will keep aside some money for that.
Next find something to do in your spare time. Boredom is a real budget killer. If you are bored you spend. So Ilsanman's advice was right on the money so to speak.
Get a cheap hobby or find some extra work on the side and pay down those student loans back home. Be a little more relaxed about the time frames involved. |

I'd hafta say that 250,000 a week is living high on the hog. Does that include a girlfriend?
I was seeing a girl and I could get by with 100,000 per week. It went up a bit if we took weekend trips or if I bought things for her or clothing and things for my place.
I also send a hefty part of my paycheck back home to pay bills and to save. I send 1 million each month just for that.

500,000 can easily buy you a home entertainment system. Just not a top of the line one.
My computer cost me (total) 250,000 and it plays music and some games, and it surfs the net just fine. I bought a PS1 for 60,000 with some games.
This is good enough for me. The only thing I really lack is a dvd player.
I could save a lot of money if I scrapped my handphone. Without it, I'd have no social life whatsoever. |
