I've seen some hakwons ads stating monthly salaries of W3 million.
The hours are heavy but the looks suspiciously high. How can this be?
Considering that the supply is greater than the demand, I'd thought hagwon salaries couldn't rise that high.

What's up with W3 mil @ a hagwon?

There are hagwons out there that pay 4 million to people who don't even have a BA (SAT hagwons in the summer). It all depends

If some hakwons pay W3 or W4 million, why do people scramble to the universities? Is it just workload? It would seem to me that hakwons may be a better bet.

There would be a handful....but why not instead look for something like 2.7 million plus free housing? However, I imagine 3 million per month means no housing, if that is what you want.

I talked to a recruiter for a while about a hagwon job that was paying 3.0 million won with free housing, OR 3.5 million won if you didn't want the housing.

The problem was long hours:

Monday to Friday 3:30 (4:30) - 9:30 (10:30) pm
Saturday 1:30 - 7:30pm

(I believe that was the Saturday shift...give or take an hour).

The school had you just follow their curriculum and teach out of their books, so basically prep was less than 30 minutes before each shift.

I agree the workload is much heavier, but at the time I was mainly concerned with finding a job that gauranteed a high salary even at the expense of a lot of hours. I liked the perks of getting up late, so to be honest the job appealed to me for a while.

1. There's not many of them that do.
2. Longer hours.
3. Less vacation.
4. Seasonal work.

I had a full-time hagwon job last year that paid 3.4 million a month. I did, however, have to pay my own rent (400,000 a month). But considering I worked about 4-5 hours a day, 4-5 days a week, it was a pretty good deal. Surprised

Aside from the Saturday, that's pretty standard for hagwons.

The recruiter is either blowing smoke up your ass or doesn't have all of the information. Or this job is so far out in the wilds that you'll need a guide and train of pack mules to get there.

Remember the Tao Of Hagwon : If it's sounds good, it most likely isn't. And it's not if you're going to get screwed, but when.
