The security researcher who walked away with $10,000 yesterday by hacking a MacBook Air in less than two minutes said he chose to attack Apple Inc.'s operating system for one simple reason.

"It was the easiest one of the three," said Charlie Miller, an analyst at Independent Security Evaluators (ISE), a Baltimore-based security consultancy. "We wanted to spend as little time as possible coming up with an exploit, so we picked Mac OS X."

Hahah, oh wow.

Well hey, at least they're still prettier. (And wasn't that the main reason to own one anyway?)

Surprise surprise, a web browser caused an OS to be hackable.

I don't use Safari, so I guess my mac is still pretty safe Smile

I would have been impressed though if they could have hacked a mac remotely.

Actually OSX has more exploits than Windows, but because it is less scrutinize than XP or Vista the security holes don't get picked up as often or as fast.

They had a previous contest like this and it was a Mac that got hacked as well.

Macs have never been more secure that's just a myth that is held to by the Mac fanboys.

Don't you think that all these years of Mac virus-proof propaganda would have spurred thousands of attempts?

What; virus writers choose to attack PCs because there are more of them?
Gimme a break. Think about the fame that would come from cracking through a Mac.
Through a web browser? Pft.

I think some people are just sore.

Exploits on Windows are mainly through its web browser IE via ActiveX. Same situation just different platform through a similar application.

Um, I'm pretty sure that's exactly what it is. Let's see, create viruses to make money off of 95% of the computers in the world using Windows, or 5% using Macs. Tough call.

PS - The numbers are made up, and probably not right. I realise this and am only using them to make it easy to see why Windows is a "bigger" target.

Has anyone suspected the anti-viral companies of creating the viruses to keep themselves in business?

Just a thought.

And yes kprrok that is a tough call Very Happy

They probably do...which makes me wonder why apple doesn't have a secret company doing that so they can sell a over priced virus program.

They probably make more from the myth that they're invincible because yuppies buy them simply for that reason and because "they're cool!"

So at the end of the last day of the contest, only the Sony VAIO laptop running Ubuntu was left standing.
